State Duals Predictions

Predictions can prove exactly how much you don’t know about wrestling. With that being said, here are some “guesses” as to quarterfinal, semifinal and championship winners at the Iowa High School Athletic Association State Duals tournament Wednesday at Wells Fargo Arena. Action begins at 9 a.m.

Of course, many will depend on what teams will wrestle state qualifiers in their lineups.

Two picks that I debated about making but didn’t include West Des Moines Dowling with an upset of Cedar Rapids Prairie and Charles City over West Delaware. I think Charles City could be a surprise finalist.

#1 SE Polk over #8 Pleasant Valley

#4 Waverly-Shell Rock over #5 Linn-Mar

#2 C.R. Prairie over #7 West Des Moines Dowling

#3 Bettendorf over #6 Ankeny

#1 SE Polk over #4 Waverly-Shell Rock

#3 Bettendorf over #2 C.R. Prairie

#1 SE Polk over #3 Bettendorf

Synopsis: Top-ranked Southeast Polk has too much talent and a powerful balanced lineup to be touched if the Rams wrestle its state qualifiers. Waverly-Shell Rock should be the semifinal foe in the Rams’ path to its first state title in any boys sport. Cedar Rapids Prairie has suffered some key injuries and have some banged up starters, so the Hawks will have a tough task with its draw. If they get by West Des Moines Dowling, knocking off defending champion Bettendorf seems unlikely.

#1 West Delaware over #8 Ballard

#4 Charles City over #5 Creston-OM

#2 Davenport Assumption over #7 Boyden Hull/Rock Valley

#3 Mediapolis over #6 Union Community

#1 West Delaware over #4 Charles City

#3 Mediapolis over #2 Davenport Assumption

#1 West Delaware over #3 Mediapolis

Synopsis: For the second straight year, Class 2A will provide the most drama at the State Duals.¬†West Delaware might not be as far ahead of the field as some think. The Hawks are looking for their second State Duals crown and first since 1991. West Delaware will be tested in the semifinal with a possible dual against Charles City. It wouldn’t be out of the question to see the Comets in the final. Mediapolis won some key matches against Davenport Assumption at district and has a chance to win a tight dual against the defending 2A champion. The top five teams have a legit shot to win it.

#1 Alburnett over #8 West Marshall

#4 Sumner-Fredericksburg over #5 Clarion-Goldfield

#2 Woodbury Central over #7 Audubon

#6 Emmetsburg over #3 Eddyville-Blakesburg

#1 Alburnett over #4 Sumner-Fredericksburg

#2 Woodbury Central over #6 Emmetsburg

#1 Alburnett over #2 Woodbury Central

Synopsis: Alburnett is looking for its first state title and the Pirates are hungry to claim a gold trophy. Alburnett is balanced and has a complete lineup from top to bottom. Don’t expect a test until they reach the finals. Woodbury Central has faced some quality opponents, wrestling competitively against larger schools at the Battle of Waterloo. Woodbury Central should be able to handle Audubon and Emmetsburg and Eddyville-Blakesburg winner. Sumner-Fredericksburg makes it State Duals debut and should reach the semifinals with a shot at a top-three finish.
