Warriors beat Jeff for 4th straight

CEDAR RAPIDS — The Washington Warriors have learned to win. And they’ve identified Jacob Olson.

After surrendering 32 points to Olson in the previous meeting, the Warriors held him to 10 Friday night. The result was their fourth straight win, a 50-40 triumph at Cedar Rapids Jefferson in a Mississippi Valley Conference boys’ basketball game.

“He’s a big piece of their puzzle, and we did a good job with our double-teams on him,” said Washington Coach Adam Sanchez. “It’s better to have four eyes on him than none.”

Washington (5-14 overall, 4-9 MVC) did not win a game last season, and lost 14 of its first 15 this winter.

Suddenly, they’ve figured it out.

“Our confidence is soaring,” said Austin Bergstrom, who did not play in the previous matchup; he slammed his finger in a car door, of all things.

“We’re playing as a team and we’re clicking right now.”

Washington scored the final eight points of the first quarter for a 12-6 advantage, and led the rest of the way.

It was 23-20 at halftime, then the Warriors broke it open with the first six points of the third quarter. The margin grew as large as 14 points (46-32, midway through the fourth quarter).

Jefferson (9-10, 6-8) got within 46-40 with 3:20 to go, but did not score again thereafter.

Ten Warriors played, and eight scored. Bergstrom led the way with 10 points. Reserves Razadon Taylor and Jake Kramer added nine and eight, respectively.

“We can go 15 deep,” Sanchez said. “You never really know whose night it’s going to be.”

Olson’s 10 points paced the J-Hawks. Jake Van Oort added nine.
