CPU locks down on Marion

CENTER POINT – Carlie Wilhelmi got one chance, and one chance only.

“I told her, ‘Make or miss,’ ” said Center Point-Urbana coach Philip Klett.

Wilhelmi tried the first 3-pointer of her varsity career — she swished it — to highlight Center Point-Urbana’s 53-26 rout of Marion in a Wamac Conference West Division girls basketball game Tuesday night at Center Point-Urbana High School.

“I’m so happy I made it,” Wilhelmi said. “I would have been so embarrassed had I airballed it or something.”

The Class 3A 13th-ranked Stormin’ Pointers (16-5 overall, 11-3 Wamac West) finished second in the Wamac West, a game behind Benton Community. And they avenged an earlier defeat against the Indians (13-7, 10-4).

Decisively.

CPU activated the continuous clock when it took a 50-15 lead midway through the fourth quarter before the Indians made it appear closer against the Stormin’ Pointers reserves. Marion shot 19 percent (9 of 47) from the field.

“They are physical and strong,” Marion coach Corby Laube said. “They took away everything in the paint. Our shot selection and patience weren’t good, and that took us out of things we wanted to do.”

Wilhelmi said, “We really wanted to lock down and make it tough for them to make shots.”

Tuesday was Senior Night at CPU, and Wilhelmi’s trey wasn’t the only quirk of the evening.

Five-foot-5 Shannon Stone took the circle for the opening jump.

“I just told her to go as high as she could, and for everybody else to get ready to play defense,” Klett said.

Wilhelm’s long shot was designed to go up on the first offensive set, but it didn’t happen until the third quarter.

Freshman Arika Wooldridge came off the bench to tabulate 16 points and seven rebounds for the Stormin’ Pointers. Wilhelmi added 12 points and six boards.

Amanda Sahm led Marion with nine points.

CPU’s regular season is complete; the Stormin’ Pointers open 3A regional play Saturday against Union.

Marion wraps up the regular season Saturday at Cedar Rapids Kennedy.
