The Iowa High School Athletic Association released all pairings for the Class 3A and 4A postseason Monday. Pairings are determined by seeds for each school, which were awarded by results in games 5 through 15.
Despite being undefeated, Western Dubuque is a No. 2 seed in Class 4A, Substate 3 because it lost significant seeding points playing a predominantly 3A-2A schedule. Cedar Falls is the top seed, with Cedar Rapids Washington and Cedar Rapids Kennedy drawing each other in a Feb. 18 substate opener at Kennedy.
The winner plays Western Dubuque on Feb. 22 at Epworth. The substate final is Feb. 26 at Kennedy, though it will be at Washington if the Cougars are involved.
In Substate 4, Linn-Mar is a third seed behind Dubuque Senior and Pleasant Valley. The Lions, who have been to the state tournament nine consecutive years, open tourney play Feb. 18 at home against Dubuque Hempstead. Also in Substate 4 is Cedar Rapids Xavier, which opens at home Feb. 18 against Clinton.
Xavier would draw Senior if it beats Clinton, while Linn-Mar would get Pleasant Valley. The substate final is at Clinton.
Defending champion Iowa City West is the top seed in Substate 6 and will play the winner of the Iowa City High-Cedar Rapids Prairie game in a substate semifinal Feb. 22. City High and Prairie play at Prairie on Feb. 18.
Also in that substate is Cedar Rapids Jefferson, which hosts Ottumwa on Feb. 18. If the J-Hawks win, they would play Feb. 22 at Burlington. The substate final is scheduled for either Muscatine or Cedar Rapids Prairie.
In Class 3A, top district seeds include No. 1-ranked Vinton-Shellsburg (District 6) and Anamosa (District 7). Marion plays a District 7 opener at Center Point-Urbana.
First-round 3A district games are Feb. 18, with district finals Feb. 21 and substate finals Feb. 25.
