Washington boys edge Prairie

CEDAR RAPIDS — Back-to-back baskets by Peter Holmes triggered a key fourth-quarter run, and Cedar Rapids Washington edged Cedar Rapids Prairie, 46-43, in a Mississippi Valley Conference boys’ basketball game Friday night at Washington.

With the game tied at 36-all, Holmes scored on a pair of inside baskets. Heath Clark added a pair of free throws to make it a six-point lead, then the Warriors (3-14 overall, 3-9 MVC) held on.

Prairie (5-12, 4-8) got within 42-41, but missed three straight free throws with a chance to take the lead.

David Rosenthal led Washington with 15 points, and Holmes added 13.

Tyler Mougin and DeMetrius Harper scored 10 apiece for Prairie.

Washington overcame an early nine-point lead, getting within 23-21 by halftime. It was 33-all after three quarters.
