CEDAR RAPIDS – Xavier junior Hayley Deutmeyer is looking forward to the “third leg” of the girls’ basketball season.
“We are coming together when we need to,” she said before Tuesday night’s 54-47 loss to Cedar Rapids Prairie. “Everyone is fulfilling their roles on the team and in order to succeed in the third leg of the season this is exactly where we need to be.”
The Class 4A sixth-ranked Saints are 9-7 overall, 6-3 in the Mississippi Valley Conference. They beat Linn-Mar, 52-37, last Friday.
The latest strectch started with a losses to Davenport Assumption and West Des Moines Valley, followed by a 60-51 win over Cedar Rapids Kennedy and a 52-41 win over Dubuque Wahlert.
“We knew we needed to come out strong and ready to play and look for our open teammates,” freshman McKenna Anderson said after the Kennedy win. “We looked to find our inside game and combined that with our outside game.”
The Saint’s outrebounded the Cougars, 33-27.
“Overall, we did a great job finishing out the game and making our free throws,” Andersen said.
Senior Ashley Stulken scored 12 points and snared 11 rebounds in the win over Wahlert.
The Saints host Cedar Falls on Friday.
