Blazing City rolls to 7th straight

IOWA CITY — Hot shooting can cure a lot of ills.

And Iowa City High has very few ills to begin with.

The Class 5A fifth-ranked Little Hawks shot 57 percent from the field and steamrolled Cedar Rapids Kennedy, 72-49, in a Mississippi Valley Conference girls’ basketball game Friday night at City High.

“The big thing about shooting is being ready to shoot, even before you get the ball,” City’s Mickey Hansche said after the Little Hawks (14-2 overall, 7-1 MVC) won their seventh straight game and extended their Mississippi Division lead to a full game over Iowa City West.

“Before I get the ball, I get my legs ready and my hands ready. When it comes, I’m ready.”

City High made 30 of 53 shots from the floor, and its guards were particularly accurate. Hansche made 9 of 14 shots in a 22-point night; Backcourt mate Kiera Washpun converted 7 of 8 tries and added 15 points.

“We didn’t try to force anything,” Hansche said. “(Washpun) did a great job of penetrating.”

City coach Bill McTaggart said, “Our shots were good, and that came from good shot selection. We continue to get better. We’re much better now than we were in November.”

If the progress continues, the Little Hawks will be a handful all the way into March.

“When they get a third scorer like they did tonight, they’re close to impossible to beat,” Kennedy coach Tony Vis said. “Hansche and Washpun got going, and we didn’t have an answer.”

The Cougars (8-5, 5-3) did a fine job against City post Haley Lorenzen, who finished with 14 points and nine rebounds. But the perimeter players were the difference.

Kennedy got out to a 9-6 lead, but the Little Hawks owned the remainder of the first half. They led 16-12 after one quarter, 40-27 at halftime.

Stephanie Botkin led the Cougars with 19 points and seven rebounds. Madi Meier added 12 points.

City High hosts Waterloo East on Tuesday. Kennedy entertains Ames on Saturday, then hosts Iowa City West on Tuesday.
