City High continues to learn lessons, loses to No. 2 Bettendorf, 61-40

IOWA CITY — It was a template, everything Don Showalter wants to see out of his Iowa City High boys’ basketball team and program someday.

Great shooting, great rebounding, great team play, the Bettendorf Bulldogs had it all Tuesday night in a 61-40 romp. They’re undefeated and ranked No. 2 in Class 4A for a reason.

This reason.

“Definitely deserve their ranking,” Showalter said. “For us, we’re trying to establish a lot of different things. We’re just not a consistent team, yet, that can bring it on a consistent basis minute after minute. I think you saw that tonight.”

Showalter took over the Little Hawks this season after a long tenure at Mid-Prairie, knowing it’ll take some time to win on a consistent basis. That’s what Bettendorf (11-0) does, reloads every year instead of rebuilds.

Only one senior is in the regular playing rotation for this Bulldogs club, too, which is downright scary for the rest of the state. Center Nicholas Baer had a team-high 16 points, complimented by guard Cole Clearman’s 13 and forward Kendal Jacks’ 12.

This was balanced basketball at its finest. Throw in a substantial 42-23 rebound edge on the glass, and it was simply too much for City High (4-8) to handle.

“The energy is a big deal,” said Clearman. “We came out of the winter break, and we didn’t have much energy in practice. We’ve picked it up. That really brought us back together.”

Coach Curtis Clark said he didn’t really think he’d see this young of a team be so successful so soon.

“I thought we were capable of it, but I certainly didn’t think we would undefeated at this point,” he said.

City High (4-8) got four treys and 14 points from senior guard Andy Hein but he was its lone double-figure scorer. Bett led at halftime, 34-21, shooting 67 percent from the field in the first half.

“We’re trying to change the culture of City High basketball,” Showalter said. “It’s a process.”
