HIGH SCHOOL JOURNALISM: Maquoketa Valley wins 6 duals in three days

Last Thursday night, the Maquoketa Valley wrestling team traveled to Alburnett to take on East Buchanan and top-ranked Class 1A Pirates.

The Wildcats defeated East Buchanan, but lost to Alburnett

“Although we were without four guys due to injuries I was very pleased with how our guys competed.” Coach Tim Andrews said.

In the first dual with East Buchanan, the ‘Cats came out victorious, 45-30. Picking up wins for MV were Steve Huber (pin), Jeremy Bacon (pin), Luke Kramer (forfeit), Ryan Parmely (7-6 decision), Tyler Yonkovic (forfeit), Greg Guetzko (pin), Jared Coyle (pin) and Dylan Wright (pin).

Andrews said he alsowas  pleased with the team’s performance against Alburnett despite the 54-25 loss.

“I felt like some guys individually improved from the first time we wrestled them,” he said. “It will be interesting to see how we match up against them later in the year when we hopefully get some of our guys back.”

Picking up victories against Alburnett were Kramer (7-0 decision), Skylar Lewis (forfeit), Parmely (pin),  Yonkovic (pin) and Coyle (11-2 decision).

On Saturday, MV hosted the Wildcat Duals and came out with a 5-0 record.

“Many guys stepped up for us in crucial situations to help us attain our goal of winning our home tournament,” Andrews said.

In the first dual against Midland, MV won by a score of 45-33. Picking up victories were Jeremy Bacon (pin), Parmely (pin), Lewis (forfeit), Yonkovic (forfeit), Coyle (pin), Carter Funke (pin), Jordy Downs (6-2 decision) and Huber (pin).

In the second dual versus Starmont, MV won by a score of 45-32. Picking up victories were Kramer (pin), Parmely (pin),  Lewis (forfeit),  Yonkovic (forfeit), Coyle (pin),  Funke (pin), Huber (forfeit), and Bacon (10-6 decision).

In the third dual against CPU, Maquoketa Valley came out on top in a hard fought, 40-39, victory. Parmely (pin), Lewis (pin), Yonkovic (pin),Coyle (major decision 14-3), Funke (pin), Trevor Koopman (pin) and Kramer (pin) all won for the Wildcats.

In the fourth dual against Beckman, the Wildcats won, 43-20. Picking up wins were  Yonkovic (forfeit), Guetzko (pin), Dakota Haugen (forfeit), Coyle (major decision 15-5),  Funke (technical fall 19-4), Huber (pin), Kramer (forfeit) and Parmely (major decision 15-3).

In the last dual against Monticello, Maquoketa Valley walked away with a 57-24 victory. Getting wins were Yonkovic (forfeit), Guetzko (pin), Coyle (forfeit), Jeremy Fischer (forfeit),  Funke (pin), Koopman (6-1 decision), Bacon (pin), Kramer (pin),  Lewis (forfeit) and Parmely (pin).

“Winning six duals in three days was is a big step in the right direction for our wrestling team at this point in the season,” Andrews said. “Everybody knows what this team is capable of. It’s just a matter of improving every time we step on the mat and getting everyone healthy. Hopefully we can keep moving in the right direction and attain the goals that we have set out for us the rest of the way.”
