ELDRIDGE – The City High wrestling team competed at the North Scott Lancer Duals last weekend, going 0-4 against several teams from the Mississippi Athletic Conference.

One of those teams was eighth-ranked North Scott. Davenport West, Dewitt Central and Fort Madison were the Little Hawks’ other opponents.

One reason City High didn’t compete at its best was because show choir athletes Amos Lavela and Damond Coghill-Behrends didn’t compete. There were three forfeits each dual at weights 126, 160 and 195 pounds.

However, the team did have two wrestlers who went undefeated. Sophomore Will Ortiz  at 106 and junior Ryan Maas at 220 went 4-0.

“We have to continually get better every week” head coach Cory Connell said after the tournament on Saturday.

Connell has opened up the wrestling room for early in the morning so wrestlers can get more time on the mat and work with the other coaches on technique.

“And what it really comes down to is how much you want it,” Connell said before the team headed to the showers.
