Clippers win it from the line

MOUNT VERNON — No fat lips. No lost teeth.

Tara Walls left with her face intact and a victory under her belt.

Clear Creek Amana made 18 of 21 free throws in the fourth quarter, including two by Walls after taking an elbow to the face, and the Clippers defeated Solon, 54-47, in a Wamac Conference cross-division girls’ basketball game Saturday at the Small Multi-Sports Center on the campus of Cornell College.

“We knew we just needed to knock down shots and keep believing in ourselves,” Walls said. “We’ve always been rivals with Solon, and this was an important win for us.”

The big moment of the game came with 5:05 left and the Clippers (6-5) nursing a two-point lead. Walls had Solon’s Emma Rickels cornered, and when Rickels tried to create some space, she elbowed Walls in the face.

“The first thing I did was check for blood,” Walls said. “I didn’t want blood on my uniform, because I didn’t want to come out of the game.”

It didn’t appear malicious, but it was ruled an intentional foul, and Walls hit both free throws.

That was part of a decisive 12-0 run, and the Clippers finished the deal at the line.

CCA prevailed despite 29 turnovers. Maliah Fligg led all scorers with 18 points, and Mallory added 12.

Solon (6-4) took a 33-32 lead into the fourth quarter, thanks to an 11-2 run in a 55-second span late in the third.

Rylee Smith, Karly Kramer and Ali Herdliska paced the Spartans with 10 points apiece.
