Mustangs stem tide, trip Regina

MOUNT VERNON — That’s one way to kill a rally.

Class 3A 12th ranked Mount Vernon held 2A No. 13 Iowa City Regina scoreless for the first seven-plus minutes of the fourth quarter and won, 41-32, in the Rivalry Saturday girls’ basketball finale Saturday night at the Small Multi-Sports Center.

The Mustangs improved to 9-2 under new coach Dennis Roloff.

“We’ve always been a good defensive team, and Coach spends a lot of practice time on shooting,” said Mount Vernon’s Alli Platte. “Tonight, it all paid off and it’s all coming together.”

Mount Vernon led from start to finish, opening with an 11-2 run. Regina (8-2) closed within 30-28 to start the fourth quarter, but it dried up there for the Regals.

“It really started with (defending Jenna Lehman),” Roloff said. “We picked her up, and we paid a lot of attention to their 3-point shooters.”

Miranda Chapman hit four free throws to start the fourth quarter, then Gabby Kolker followed with a pair of baskets — one from outside, one from inside — to restore the lead to 10.

Chapman led the Mustangs with 12 points. Platte added 10, Laura Deininger nine. Chapman’s 3-pointer gave the Mustangs their largest lead at 26-14 early in the third quarter.

But the Regals scored the next six points, and Lehman’s layup with 20 seconds left in the third brought Regina within a basket.

Lehman led Regina with eight points, but had to work hard to get them.
