Mid-Prairie claims 3A showdown

MOUNT VERNON — Defense turned Mid-Prairie’s lone blemish into a non-issue.

The Class 3A eighth-ranked Golden Hawks froze No. 4 Mediapolis in the first half and held on for a 40-31 non-conference girls’ basketball victory Saturday at the Small Multi-Sports Central on the Cornell College campus.

“As big as they are, you’ve got to rely on your pressure,” Mid-Prairie Coach Marc Pennington said. “We created a lot of opportunities with our defense.”

Mid-Prairie (6-2) held the Bullettes (10-1) to 27-percent shooting and forced 27 turnovers in wiping Mediapolis off the list of unbeatens; there are four left in Class 3A.

The Golden Hawks built a 24-9 halftime lead, then held off a late run.

They did so despite some shaky shooting at the free throw line. Mid-Prairie made just 4 of 19 foul shots in the fourth quarter, 5 of 20 for the game.

That opened the door for the Bullettes, but they couldn’t step through.

Mediapolis got within 35-31 when Jessica Holsteen made two free throws with 3:46 remaining, but didn’t score another point.

“We just put our minds to it that we were going to make it hard for them to score,” said Mid-Prairie’s Mariah Swartzentruber, who posted 16 points and six steals. “We put out an all-out effort.”

Five different players scored in a 14-0 Mid-Prairie run that broke it open in the second quarter.

Andrea Larson led Mediapolis with 11 points and nine rebounds.
