Warriors put chill on Regina

CEDAR RAPIDS — Iowa City Regina had been the best shooting team in the state.

Then came Tuesday, the big chill.

Cedar Rapids Washington held the Class 2A 13th-ranked Regals to 27.5-percent shooting in a 61-33 non-conference girls’ basketball win at Washington High School.

“We were hoping to get a hand in their face so they wouldn’t knock down the 3-pointers,” said Washington’s Dani Franklin, who posted a monster game statistically.

Franklin, a junior, collected 22 points, 15 rebounds and seven steals as Washington (6-2) won its sixth straight game.

“I feel like I’m going up stronger than I had been under the basket,” she said.

Regina (7-1) entered the game shooting 52.2 percent from the field and 53.5 percent from 3-point range, and both of those figures ranked No. 1 in Iowa.

Tuesday, the Regals were just 14 of 51 from the floor, 1 of 12 from long distance.

“They were bigger, faster and more experienced than us,” said Regina Coach Clark Anderson. “They banged on us inside, and Franklin and (Abby) Herb are so versatile with their size and ability.

“We learned a lot from this, but I sure hate getting beat like this.”

Washington led from the start, scoring the first 10 points and building on it from there. The Warriors led, 34-18, at halftime and pushed the advantage to 30 points on three occasions in the fourth quarter.

“We continue to get better,” said Washington Coach Frank Howell. “Hopefully we keep making strides in all facets of the game. We have a lot of good opponents coming up, so we’d better.”

Herb added 11 points for the Warriors. Madison Kramer scored eight, all in the first half.

Jenna Lehman led Regina with 10 points. Megan Fackler posted eight points and 10 rebounds.

Washington is scheduled to conclude its pre-holiday slate Friday at home against Cedar Rapids Jefferson. Cedar Valley Conference leader Regina’s next game is Jan. 4, when it hosts North Cedar.
