Quick-handed Dickes keys Xavier

CEDAR RAPIDS — Need a heist? Contact Sarah Dickes. And Kayla Armstrong makes a fine accomplice.

Dickes flirted with a school record, collecting 11 steals as Class 4A fifth-ranked Cedar Rapids Xavier defeated Cedar Rapids Jefferson, 53-47, in a Mississippi Valley Conference girls’ basketball game Tuesday night at Ron Thillen Gymnasium.

“We knew Jefferson was going to play fast,” Dickes said. “When we get a steal or a rebound, we can get some fast-break points, and that’s our bread and butter. It gets us fired up, and we’re able to go on a run.”

Dickes, a senior, had more thefts than an Ocean’s Eleven sequel, and she was complemented by Armstrong’s five steals as Xavier improved to 6-2 overall, 4-1 in the MVC. Dickes came up two steals short of the school record.

“Her hands … we went into the season hopeful that she would cause some difficulty with opposing point guards,” said Xavier Coach Tom Lilly.

Jefferson (3-5, 2-3) was right in the hunt most of the way, trailing just 45-42 when Taylor Jacobson scored with 4:10 to go. But the Saints followed with an 8-2 run to wrap it up.

Maddie Bertsch led Xavier with 12 points. Hayley Deutmeyer added 10, and Dickes, Armstrong and Morgan Breitbach registered eight apiece.

The game featured 50 turnovers, 28 by Jefferson.

“We’re close,” said first-year Jefferson coach Jason Edwards. “There were a few key plays here and there in which we have to make better decisions. Once we do that, I really feel that we can play with anybody.”

Xavier prevailed despite a 9-of-21 free throw display.

“It’s our Achilles heel,” Lilly said. “You just hope it doesn’t come back and haunt us later in the season.”

A back-and-forth first half ended in a 22-22 stalemate. Xavier scored the first five points of the second half — a runner by Breitbach and a 3-pointer by freshman McKenna Andersen — and held a slim lead the rest of the way.

Jefferson crept within a basket on three occasions late in the third quarter, then cut it to 41-40 on Dani Stromert’s two free throws.

Maddie Koolbeck paced the J-Hawks with 13 points. Jacobson added 10.

Xavier hosts Iowa City West on Friday; Jefferson hosts Waterloo West.
