Whatever the score, Iowa City West wins big

IOWA CITY — Basketball coaches tell their teams all the time not to play to the scoreboard, especially when a game is out of hand. Iowa City West and Davenport Central truly did that Tuesday night.

What was believed to be a 72-46 West romp was really a 66-46 West romp after six points were mysteriously added to the Trojans total.

“It’s hard to do that,” said West Coach Steve Bergman.

The bonus points, if you will, came in the first quarter. The scoreboard listed a 23-5 West lead that actually was 17-5.

The absolutely amazing thing was that neither team’s coaches said a word about the discrepancy until the game was over and the individual points were totaled. Bergman had no clue about it until notified by a reporter postgame.

The coach has a lot of bigger-picture things on his mind. His top-ranked team moved to 3-0 with its 29th consecutive victory, though he didn’t think it played especially well.

Wyatt Lohaus had 13 points for West, with Myzeah Batie-Gaddy adding 12 points and 10 rebounds.

“I don’t know where we’re at,” Bergman said. “We’ve got a long way to go mentally. You’re dealing with a lot of notoriety, with a lot of people telling you how great you are. We haven’t figured out a way to deal with that properly. The guys have got to figure it out. We’ve got to be a little hungrier than we are right now.”

West again played without guard Dondre Alexander, one of three Division I college players on the team. The Southern Mississippi signee was suspended last week after a verbal conflict with Davenport Assumption Coach Joe Barrer in the Trojans’ season-opening, last-second win.

Alexander said on Twitter the suspension was for a week, but Bergman hinted it was open ended.

“He’ll be back when he’s back,” Bergman said, choosing not to give further comment.
