CEDAR RAPIDS — The softball field at the bottom of the hill will be renamed next spring.
Cedar Rapids Community School superintendent Dave Benson approved a request by the Jefferson High School Booster Club to name it “Larry Niemeyer Field,” the district confirmed Thursday.
“We believe placing Larry Niemeyer’s name on the field at the Jefferson Softball Complex, where it can stand as a permanent reminder of his contributions to Jefferson High School and the Cedar Rapids Community School District, is a worthy mark of our appreciation,” said Mark Fiala, booster club president.
Now the coach at Waterloo West, Niemeyer is the nation’s winningest softball coach, with 2,089 victories. He led Jefferson to three state championships (1983, 1997, 1998) and 19 state-tournament appearances.
He was not retained after the 2012 season.
“It’s really an honor to have something named after you,” Niemeyer said. “With the help of a lot of parents and players, we put a lot of effort into making that into a nice field for the girls.
“There are a lot of memories down there.”
An official dedication of the field will be held next spring. Waterloo West plays at Jefferson on May 28.
