CEDAR RAPIDS — Iowa City High was close. Solon was closer. And Union was the closest.

Three area volleyball teams reached the state finals. And those three teams combined for four first-team all-state players. The Iowa Girls Coaches Association released its honor teams Monday morning.

City High’s Michaela Nelson and Abby Saehler were Class 5A first team picks, Kelsey Cave of Solon was honored in 4A and Union’s Sam Barz was picked to the top team in 3A.

West Delaware’s Leslie Hoffmann was the other area first-team pick. She was honored in 4A.

MOC-Floyd Valley’s Alexis Conaway is the state player of the year after leading the Dutch to the 3A championship. Conaway is a junior who has committed to play at Iowa State.

Nelson and Saehler pushed City High to the finals for the second straight year. Last year, the Little Hawks lost in five games to Iowa City West. This year, they fell to Bettendorf in four sets.

City High finished 31-9.

A junior, Nelson averaged 2.92 kills and 3.42 digs per game. Saehler, who has committed to play at Division-II Wingate (N.C.), added 2.77 kills per game and led the Little Hawks in kill efficiency and blocks.

Cave — who will play next year at Bradley — led Solon (33-5) at 3.09 kills per set and a .457 kill efficiency. The Spartans reached the 4A finals and had top-ranked Charles City on the ropes before falling in five sets.

Hoffmann averaged 3.82 kills per set and owned a .433 kill efficiency for West Delaware (31-12), which reached the state tournament for the seventh time in the last 10 years.

Barz was the top player for a Union team that came excruciatingly close to the 3A title. The Knights (35-8) had three match points in the fifth game against MOC-Floyd Valley before falling, 17-15. Barz averaged 3.63 kills per game.

Audrey Reeg of Dubuque Hempstead was the 5A player of the year. Jessie Sindlinger of Charles City took 4A honors while Conaway was tabbed in 3A. Brooke Wolterstorff of Western Christian and Briana Weber of Dike-New Hartford shared 2A honors and Samantha Meyer of Grundy Center was the top player in 1A.

Those six players were selected to the Elite Team, along with Rachel Koop of DNH and Mikaela Foecke of Fort Madison Holy Trinity.

Cedar Rapids Xavier’s Kayla Torson was the lone Metro player named to an all-state team. The sophomore is a second-teamer in 4A.
