CEDAR RAPIDS – It was no contest in the final 1A quarterfinal of the night as the state’s top-ranked team made it look easy.
The Spartans (34-6) rolled to a 25-13, 25-18, 25-13 win over the Defenders, earning a spot in tonight’s semifinal against Janesville.
Grundy Center was led by 2011 all-staters Heather Hook and Samantha Meyers, who has committed to play at Drake. Meyers was her usual dominant self at the net while Hook’s passing from her setter position left the Defenders (29-7) often confused and out of position. Hook has committed to play at Northern Iowa.
The Spartans, a Class 2A semifinalist last year, seemed to lose a little focus midway through Game 2, but came alive at the end to stop a Defender run.
In Game 3, Hook served seven straight points as Grundy Center took control and never looked back. She finished with five ace serves. Meyers ended up with a match-high 15 kills.
“I thought Grandview gave us a tough match,” said Grundy Center Coach Darwin Sents. “I thought we did a really good job of blocking and our serving was very good.”
Maddie Thompson and Kaylee Whittington led the Defenders with five kills each.
