CEDAR RAPIDS — In Ankeny’s 6-2 offense, the “two” are twins.
“We’ve been doing it this way since we started playing volleyball,” said Katie Roberts, the elder twin by 3 minutes. “When I come out, I tell (younger twin Jenny) what we need to work on, but mostly I just tell her, ‘Good job.’ ”
There was a lot of good by the top-ranked Hawkettes in a 25-18, 25-23, 25-18 sweep of Johnston in a Class 5A quarterfinal at the state volleyball tournament Wednesday afternoon at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.
Ankeny (30-6) advances to Friday’s semifinal match opposite No. 4 Iowa City High (30-8). The Little Hawks beat West Des Moines Dowling in four sets.
Jenny Roberts collected 12 assists, and Katie dished out 11.
And Katie Roberts delivered an ace serve to cap a three-point run at the end of the second set that put the Hawkettes in the driver’s seat for good.
“Coach (Dave Whims) just told me to put it in the middle of the court, just get it inbounds,” Roberts said. “I looked over and said, ‘I got this.’ It turned out better than just getting it in.”
Megan Ballenger and Jaali Winters collected seven kills apiece for the winners.
“It feels good to move on,” Ballenger said. “Johnson is a good team, and we had to fight back at times.”
Taylor Joens smacked 11 kills for Johnston (26-9). Joens is one of five junior starters in the Dragons starting lineup.
