The No. 8 West Delaware Hawks dropped the first two sets, 27-29, 19-25, but rallied to take the next three from No. 13 Dubuque Wahlert, 25-14, 25-22, 15-8, Tuesday night in a Class 4A regional volleyball final at Delhi. The Golden Eagles finished the season at 17-18, and West Delaware takes a 31-11 record to next week’s state tournament in Cedar Rapids, where it will open against Sioux City Heelan (35-10) in the first round.
Iowa City High swept Burlington in straight sets at Iowa City West, 25-13, 25-13, 25-20, and City High (29-8) will face West Des Moines Dowling (33-10) in a first-round game at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday in Class 5A at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.
Class 3A No. 7 Union won in straight sets, 25-21, 25-18, 25-17, over unranked Osage to advance to the state tournament for the second time in two years. Union (33-7) will face Sioux Center (31-6) at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in a quarterfinal game on court one at the Ice Arena.
Cascade was unable to overcome Davenport Assumption (28-7) in a regional final at Clarence. Davenport Assumption swept Cascade, 25-18, 25-22, 25-13, and will play Mount Vernon (27-10) in a first round quarterfinal match at 2 p.m. Thursday in Class 3A.
The No. 6 ranked Solon Spartans won the first match, 25-11, over Oskaloosa but dropped the second match, 23-25, and saw an 11-set winning streak end. Solon (31-4) rallied to win the last two sets, 25-11, 25-18, to reach the state tournament, where it will play Harlan (32-5) at 6 p.m. next Wednesday.
Class 4A No. 7 ranked Maquoketa lost a hard-fought battle to No. 5 North Scott at DeWitt. Maquoketa took the first and third sets, 25-22 and 29-27, and North Scott won the second and fourth sets, 25-23 and 25-23. In final set, North Scott (27-5) prevailed, 15-12, and will face Waverly-Shellrock (44-7) in a Class 4A quarterfinal match at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in Cedar Rapids.
