Playoff roundup: West Branch, Solon, Decorah among winners

WEST BRANCH 33, CLAYTON RIDGE 0

For those of you who wanted Iowa City Regina and West Branch Part II, you will get your wish.

Cade Jones rushed for 225 yards and scored four touchdowns to lead the Bears to a 33-0 Class 1A first-round playoff victory over Clayton Ridge Wednesday night in Guttenberg.

After a 7-0 West Branch first quarter, Bo Bower intercepted an Eagles pass and returned it to the Clayton Ridge 2-yard line. Jones punched it in from there. The Bears then recovered an Eagles fumble on the ensuing kickoff.

“We are pleased to play that well against a quality opponent,” said West Branch Coach Butch Pedersen. “To beat the second seed in that district the way we did makes us feel good.”

Clayton Ridge managed just 62 yards for the game.

West Branch is 17-4 in first round games all time.

The Bears and Regals face off Monday at 7 p.m. in Iowa City.

DECORAH 35, MAQUOKETA 0

Jake Kzale completed 5 of 6 passes for 117 yards and two touchdowns and the Viking defense limited Maquoketa to minus-15 yards rushing.

Both of Kzale’s TD passes went to Michael Porter, covering a total of 96 yards.

Holt Johansen rushed for 112 yards and a TD for top-ranked Decorah (10-0) and Josey Jewell added 55 rushing yards and two TDs.

The Vikings play Solon (8-2) on Monday.

The game was called due to weather with 9:29 to play in the fourth quarter and Decorah on top by the 35-0 score.

SOLON 24, CRESTWOOD 7

Rory Siddell rushed 16 times for 107 yards and two touchdowns to lead Solon (8-2) to a Class 3A win at home.

Siddell also completed 6 of 9 passes for 49 yards.

Jordan Wymer led the Spartans with 108 yards on nine carries and Aaron Shulista carried the ball seven times for 88 yards, including an 11-yard TD run in the first quarter.

DEWITT CENTRAL 24, WEST DELAWARE 21

Freshman Keegan Lass, brought up to the varsity for the playoffs, kicked a 26-yard field goal with 49.3 seconds left to lift the Sabers in Manchester.

Down 21-6 in the fourth, West Delaware tied the game with 5:20 left on the second of Brent Lammers’ one-yard touchdown runs, but DeWitt marched down for the winning kick.

Mitchell Green rushed for 77 yards and three touchdowns for Central, scoring on runs of 23, 3 and 1 yards. Chris Keitel rushed for 193 yards on 32 carries for the Sabers.

Lammers, who passed for 168 yards and rushed for 88, had a hand in all three Hawk touchdowns, throwing 93 yards to Jack Curley at the end of the first half before his two fourth-quarter runs.

West Delaware ends the season at 7-3. Central (7-3) plays Marion on Monday.

MAQUOKETA VALLEY 21, SIGOURNEY-KEOTA 14

Ben Dzaboff ran for 60 yards and two touchdowns and passed for 133 yards, and Ryan Parmelee rushed for 102 yards to lead Maquoketa Valley (9-1) to a victory in Delhi.

The Wildcats (9-1) will play Wilton on Monday.

STARMONT 51, BELLE PLAINE 14

Jake Butler rushed for 125 yards and two touchdowns and David Lowry completed 7 of 12 passes for 253 yards and two scores to lead the Stars at home.

Alan Hayes caught two of Lowry’s passes for 101 yards and a TD.

Nick Pippert rushed for 120 yards for the Plainsmen (6-4).

Starmont (8-2) will play North Tama (9-1) Monday.

MID-PRAIRIE 24, PC-MONROE 7

Eesaa Baylor rushed for 184 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries as the Hawks rolled in Wellman.

Mid-Prairie (8-2) will play Bondurant-Farrar on Monday.

UNION COMMUNITY 63, MOUNT VERNON 20

Trev Hadachek scored five touchdowns for Union Community (9-1) in a Class 2Agame at La Porte City.

Hadachek scored in a multitude of ways for the Knights, reaching the end zone twice via the run, once on a pass reception, returned a punt for a score and added an interception return for a TD.

Mount Vernon ended its season at 5-5.

HLV 60, LAMONI 24

Tanner DeBrower, Dakota Stults and Cole Lahndorf scored two touchdowns apiece as the Warriors rolled in Victor.

Landorf rushed for 131 yards, DeBrower  99 and Stults added 60.

HLV (9-0) will host Adair-Casey (9-1) on Monday.
