WATERLOO – Iowa City West scored early and then used a late first-half surge to break open the game on the way to a 47-20 victory over Waterloo East Friday in the regular season finale at Memorial Stadium.
Despite the wet and muddy conditions, Tavian Smith raced 87 yards for theTD on the kickoff. East battled back before the pair of scores in the final 95 seconds extended the ICW lead.
Ezra Reiners turned what looked like a bad handoff into a 60-yard run up the middle. That set up Micah Kelsay’s 1-yard touchdown plunge with 1 minute, 35 seconds left in the half.
Then Jessie Peterson intercepted an East pass at the Trojan 31. Three plays later, Kelsay tallied for the third time in the half, this time on a 1-yard run, with 30 seconds remaining in the quarter.
East used a series of big passing plays to stay close to Iowa City West.
Quarterback Desmond Van Arsdale hit A’Darrius Riley with TD strikes of 70 and 19 yards as the Trojans consistently found open receivers in the ICW secondary.
East actually controlled play for much of the third quarter, but it didn’t put points on the baord until the fourth.
East finishes at 5-4 with a playoff game on top. Iowa City West is 9-0 for its first unbeaten regular season since 1999.
