Marion blanks Clear Creek Amana

MARION – Trev Biery wasn’t on the field much, but he made the most of his opportunities.

The Marion senior suffered an ankle injury in last week’s victory over Solon and was questionable for last night’s home finale against Clear Creek Amana.

Indians’ Coach Tony Perkins picked his spots with Biery. He carried nine times for 84 yards in the first half and a pair of scores Marion built a 21-0 lead and went on to a 27-0 Class 3A, District 6 win over the Clippers.

The win clinches at least a share of the district title for the Indians (7-1, 5-0) and guaranteed a home playoff game in the first round. If Marion can win next week at DeWitt Central next Friday, they will clinch a No. 1 seed and a berth against a No. 4 seed from District 7.

Clear Creek Amana drops to 4-4 overall, 2-3 in district play.

“I thought we played well at times and at times I thought we struggled,” Perkins said. “I think the emotion of parents night had some of the players a little off.”

Biery did all his work in the first half, taking the rest of the night off to rest his ankle. With Biery out, two other Indians topped the 100-yard mark. Colton Mowry led the way with 21 carries for 123 yards while Andrew Davis came through with 101 yards on 15 carries. He scored on a 15-yard run in the second quarter. Marion finished the scoring with a 10 yard pass from Trevor Hardman to Quinn Cannoy in the third quarter.

The Marion defense held CCA’s spread attack to 107 total yards and just seven first downs.

“I’ve been proud of the way our seniors have led this year,” Perkins said. “They did a great job of pulling the juniors in and getting them in line with the program. The difference between last year and this year wasn’t even close.”

The win was Perkins’ 98th career win at Marion, where he has been the head coach since 1999. He is tied with his predecessor, Dave Messerli, for second on the all-time Marion win list. Les Hipple, who coached from 1945-62 at Marion, tops the list with a 105-42-10 mark.
