A conglomeration of volleyball notes during a busy week:
WAMAC PLAY REACHES BRACKET PHASE
The Wamac Conference tournament will enter bracket play Thursday at Mount Vernon High School. Here are championship pairings, based on Tuesday’s pool play:
#1 Solon (26-4) vs. #8 Clear Creek Amana (20-11), 5 p.m.
#4 Mount Vernon (23-9) vs. #5 Marion (25-12), 4 p.m.
#3 Maquoketa (27-5) vs. #6 West Delaware (27-10), 4 p.m.
#2 Waterloo Columbus (24-11) vs. #7 Dyersville Beckman (20-13), 5 p.m.
Solon, Columbus and Maquoketa swept their three pool matches while Mount Vernon dropped two sets. The Spartans earned the top seed by point differential (plus-52, compared to plus-46 for Columbus and plus-39 for Maquoketa).
The semifinals are scheduled for 6:30 p.m., with the championship at 7:15.
MVC TOURNAMENT SEEDINGS RELEASED
Cedar Rapids Kennedy and Cedar Rapids Xavier will co-host the Mississippi Valley Conference tournament Saturday.
Here are pool-play assignments, based on league standings.
Pool A (at Kennedy) — Iowa City High (23-7), Waterloo West (18-13), Dubuque Senior (11-17), Cedar Rapids Prairie (13-17)
Pool B (at Kennedy) — Cedar Rapids Xavier (21-9), Cedar Rapids Kennedy (17-11), Cedar Rapids Washington (20-11), Cedar Rapids Jefferson (4-21)
Pool C (at Xavier) — Dubuque Hempstead (22-4), Dubuque Wahlert (13-15), Waterloo East (3-21)
Pool D (at Xavier) — Cedar Falls (22-9), Iowa City West (16-12), Linn-Mar (13-16)
Action begins at 9 a.m. at both sites. Bracket play is expected to start around 2:30 p.m., with the championship bracket at Kennedy and the consolation bracket at Xavier.
A CROWNING ACHIEVEMENT FOR XAVIER
A sweep at Cedar Rapids Prairie, coupled by Cedar Falls’ loss to Cedar Rapids Washington, wrapped up the MVC Valley Division championship for Cedar Rapids Xavier.
It is the first league volleyball title for the Saints, who improved to 21-9 overall and 5-0 in the Valley Division.
FOND FAREWELL FOR CASCADE
Cascade won its first outright Tri-Rivers Conference championship in its final year in the league.
The Cougars (18-8 overall) concluded a 9-0 league run by sweeping Central City on Tuesday, and will be favored in the Tri-Rivers tournament Saturday at Arlington. Their top challengers will be Edgewood-Colesburg (22-5, 8-1) and Starmont (18-6, 7-2).
Next year, Cascade will be a member of an expanded Cedar Valley Conference.
REGIONAL ROAD BEGINS TUESDAY
The postseason march begins for Class 1A teams next Tuesday, with regional first-round matches, while 2A teams get started next Wednesday.
One Gazette-area team is ranked in those two classes. Cedar Valley Conference champion West Branch is No. 4 in 2A, has a first-round bye and doesn’t play until Oct. 23.
Regional quarterfinals are Oct. 22 in 3A, 4A and 5A. Regional finals are Oct. 30 in the three largest classes, Oct. 31 in the two smallest.
The state tournament is Nov. 7-10 at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.
