DUBUQUE – Linn-Mar (2-4, 2-2 MVC-Valley) rolled up 412 total yards in the opening half to jump to a 42-0 lead on Wahlert. Quarterback Rhys Davis was exceptional for the Lions, rushing for 110 first-half yards, including three scoring runs. Davis also tossed two touchdown passes.
“It sounds really cliché, but I have to hand it to my linemen,” Davis said. “We struggled up front for the (first) half of the season. We are starting to get our feet underneath us, and starting to get a lot of confidence.”
Linn-Mar set the tone on the game’s first drive. The Lions marched 80 yards on a 12 plays and chewing 4:59 off of the clock. Davis capped the drive with a 15-yard scoring strike to Jon Schlotterback.
On Linn-Mar’s following possession, Davis capped the drive by finding Zach Martins for a 25-yard scoring strike. Davis also added scoring runs from 7, 12 and 5 yards, while Nick Trabucco added a 1-yard run in the first half.
“We just had a great week of practice,” Linn-Mar coach Bob Forsyth said. “This is a young, inexperienced group of kids that we have. The great thing is they have been getting better every week.”
Junior quarterback Danny Broderick continued to grow into his position for the Golden Eagles. Broderick, who came into the year as Wahlert’s No. 3 quarterback, completed 9-of-22 passes for 133 yards. He tallied his first scoring pass of the season, when he found Weslee Haynes for a 23-yard strike in the fourth quarter.
“I thought he did a great job of really trying to keep things under control and doing what he could to play within himself,” Mahoney said. “We had some receivers who definitely tried to make some plays for him.”
As the Golden Eagles prepare to travel to Cedar Falls next week, Mahoney and his coaching staff will go back to the drawing board.
“We just have to keep analyzing what we did right each week and building on those plays,” he said. “We’ll see what happens next week.”
