Schulte continues great season as Xavier rolls Kennedy, 35-0

CEDAR RAPIDS — It was a loaded question, but it was asked anyway. Are you a better quarterback than your dad was, Reggie Schulte?

“Uh, I might get in trouble if I answer that,” the Cedar Rapids Xavier senior said, after his Class 4A sixth-ranked Saints waxed Cedar Rapids Kennedy, 35-0, Friday night. “I haven’t seen enough film of him.”

Xavier head coach Duane Schulte could play the game back in the day, an all-stater at Cedar Rapids LaSalle. But it’s hard to imagine old dad having a better season than his boy has had so far.

Reggie Schulte threw four touchdown passes as Xavier rolled to 5-0. He connected with eight different receivers, completing 15 of 18 passes for 204 yards to increase what already is the state’s best passer rating.

Schulte came into the game completing 76 percent of his throws and now has 18 TD passes to just one interception. There are a lot of reasons this Saints team is good, and he’s one of them.

“I try not to get caught up in the stats,” Schulte said. “The only stat I know is the interceptions … It was against (Dubuque) Hempstead in our first game. I just made a terrible decision. I think a lot of it is a credit to our line blocking and giving me great time. Our receivers, Corbin Woods and Bryce Grimm, they do a great job of finding the open spot and catching the ball.”

Woods had two touchdown receptions in this one and Grimm one. The fourth TD pass was a 3-yard jump ball to 6-foot-8 Matt Nelson.

Throw in Brendan Miller’s 101 yards rushing and a touchdown, and this Saints offense has a lot of weapons. That’s even without top tailback Cal Stovie, who had surgery this week to repair a partially torn LCL and fully torn ACL.

Miller has done tremendously in two games replacing him. There could be a little worry with fullback Logan Jones and tight end Jim Moore injuring legs Friday night, though they didn’t seem serious.

“I think it’s just being more comfortable (this season), not only just with the offense but the setting,” Schulte said. “I guess it’s just experience. You can always draw back on your experiences from last year … But, you know, there’s always room for improvement. You can always get better.”

This also was a defensive gem for Xavier, which limited Kennedy (0-5) to 181 yards. The Cougars continue to be a one-dimensional team offensively, with Xavier able to bottle up that one dimension (Alex Hillyer) to the tune of four second-half yards.

Hillyer carried 16 times in the first half for 78 yards. Quarterback Riley Fergus completed 8 of 20 throws for 90 yards, though 53 of those came late in the game on one play to tight end Jacob Frazier-Flores.

“Our focus is to stop the run, no matter who we’re playing,” said linebacker Emiliano Martinez, who seemed to be all over the field defensively. “I think that’s just how football is played. You try and stop the run first, and you just go from there.”

“If you get a shutout in this league, that’s a huge thing,” Coach Schulte said. “You should probably be talking to Jim O’Connell and the defensive coaches … I work for them, kind of.”
