MANCHESTER — The top-ranked Decorah Vikings withheld a strong second-quarter performance from 10th-rated and fellow 3A District 5 rival West Delaware en route to a 37-13 win Friday night.
Decorah senior fullback Josey Jewell led the way for the Vikings, rushing for two touchdowns, in a game televised live by KCRG 9.2.
“This was a big win against a huge rival for us,” said Jewell.
“Every time we play these guys, it’s a tough game, so it’s nice to get this win.”
The Vikings’ defense showed its strength up front on West Delaware’s opening drive of the game by sacking quarterback Brent Lammerson on two consecutive plays.
The second sack resulted in a safety as senior defensive lineman Andrew Hovden tackled Lammers in the end zone to give Decorah a 2-0 lead.
Decorah then displayed its red zone offense on the second series.
Following a Hawks fumble at the Vikings’ 18 yard-line, Jewell scored his first touchdown on a 2-yard run to give the Vikings a 9-0 lead.
Jewell was at it again on the Vikings’ next possession, this time exploding with an 89-yard touchdown run, giving Decorah a 16-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Jewell rushed the ball eight times for 100 yards and two TDs in the first half.
Trailing 16-0 at the end of the first, West Delaware stayed strong in the second. Senior running back Ryan Dudakput the Hawks on the board by scampering for a 70-yard touchdown run.
With 1:58 left in the second quarter, Dudak again blew past Viking defenders for his second TD of the game, this run coming from 80 yards out.
Dudak’s second score put the Hawks right back within striking distance, as West Delaware trailed 16-13 at halftime.
But the second half would belong to the Vikings.
Decorah began the third quarter with an 81-yard scoring drive. Senior quarterback Jacob Klave capped off the drive with a 1-yard TD dive.
The score gave Decorah a 23-13 lead.
The Vikings got their aerial attack going on their next drive as Klave connected with senior tight end Michael Peter for a 34-yard touchdown pass to put Decorah up 30-13.
Decorah added a score in the fourth as senior Drew Schwartz scored from 26 yards out.
