The best Class 4A boys’ golfers in the corridor will get together Tuesday for the annual CRANDIC tournament at Ellis Golf Course in Cedar Rapids.
The favorites are host Cedar Rapids Kennedy and Cedar Rapids Xavier. Kennedy and Xavier have taken turns beating each other, with the Saints winning the season-opening MVC Super Meet in Dubuque and the Cougars coming back to clip Xavier at the Linn-Mar Invitational.
And then there is Linn-Mar. Coach Steve Kahler’s Lions have been right on the heels of their Metro rivals, finishing a close third in both events.
Now Linn-Mar has its chance to try and overtake its 42nd Street rivals at the CRANDIC. After losing most of their roster from last year’s state qualifying team, the Lions have quietly put together another balanced team, led by sophomore Trevor McCann.
“To be honest, I am a little surprised at how well we have started,” Kahler said. “We are a young and inexperienced team, but we have been playing well so far.”
McCann has stepped up to be the leader for the Lions. The sophomore is the lone returner from last fall’s state qualifying team. Kahler said Linn-Mar has eight to 10 players capable of playing on the varsity squad.
“He was our No. 6 guy last year and now he has had to step up and be No. 1,” Kahler said. “He has handled it very well.”
Sophomore Bobby Charlton, junior Jason Gingrich and freshman Jacob Sevcik have all been steady, according to Kahler.
“Those guys have all played well, but the nice thing is that we aren’t close to having a set lineup,” Kahler said. “We have a lot of quality competition going on in practice.”
Kahler said he is looking forward to seeing how his team matches up with the likes of Kennedy and Xavier.
“I was impressed how well we played in the (MVC) Super Meet,” Kahler said. “Finishing that close to Kennedy and Xavier was a good result.”
