CLASS 1A QUARTERFINAL
Lisbon (35-7) vs. Mason City Newman (34-4)
When: 8 p.m.
Where: Principal Park, Des Moines
Scouting Report: These teams had very different quarterfinal games. Newman pounced early on Earlham and posted a 11-2 victory. Lisbon trailed the entire way before rallying for two runs in the seventh inning to oust Lawton-Bronson, 5-4. Newman won a regular-season encounter between these two, 14-4. The Knights, the No. 2 seed, came into this tournament with a .365 team batting average, led by Jacob Adams’ .491. He’s the son of head coach Tony Adams. Lisbon has the state’s busiest pitcher in senior Marshall Morgan, who has thrown 109 2/3 innings this season, including a complete game against Lawton-Bronson. The guess is freshman Connor Woodward (7-2, 2.79 ERA) will get the call Thursday. The Lions have a unique roster, with five seniors, a junior, nine freshmen and two eighth-graders.

CLASS 2A QUARTERFINAL
Dyersville Beckman (36-7) vs. Carroll Kuemper (27-11)
When: Noon
Where: Principal Park, Des Moines
Scouting Report: Beckman eked past West Branch, 2-1, in its quarterfinal, while Kuemper smashed Ogden, 9-2. Those games were last Friday, so it’s been a long wait for both clubs. Beckman is 2A’s top seed and has won 25 of its last 26 games. Senior Nate Steger has been a stalwart pitcher and third baseman. He threw a complete game against West Branch to improve his record to 6-1. He’s also a .469 hitter with 25 doubles and six home runs. Kuemper ace Chris Halbur threw a complete-game five-hitter against Ogden, striking out 13, to improve his season record to 8-1. His earned run average is under 1.00.
