DES MOINES — The celebration lasted, oh, maybe 10 seconds.
Kali Slaymaker crossed the finish line. Paige Greiner sprinted to her, pumping her fist.
The Williamsburg Raiders thought they were Class 3A 800-meter relay state champions.
“You win the fast heat, you think you win the race,” Greiner said.
Instead, Dubuque Wahlert’s time in the second heat held up Thursday at Drake Stadium. Wahlert ran 1:45.06; Williamsburg settled for second in 1:45.77.
“It’s a little frustrating,” Slaymaker said. “I was so excited. I thought we had it. We’ve really been working hard at it.”
Williamsburg’s effort — Greiner, Brooke Beasley, Rebecca Imhoff and Slaymaker ran it for the Raiders — highlighted area performances among 3A girls.
Defending champion Wahlert holds the lead in the team race through 10 events. The Golden Eagles have 52 points, followed by Davenport Assumption (35) and Solon (31).
The final nine events are Saturday.
Solon got a third-place finish from its distance medley relay team and fourth place from Kara Misel in the shot put.
Laura Benzing anchored the distance medley. She finished third in the 3,000 Thursday.
“Today was a fun race,” Benzing said. “It’s fun to pass people. It feels good to stretch out my legs. I think I know my pace better in the 800 than the 3,000.”
