Finalists for Athlete of the Week

Here are the finalists for this week’s KCRG-TV9 Athlete of the Week. Go to www.kcrg.com/sports/athleteoftheweek to vote.

Ben Larson
New Hampton
Track and Field

Ben is coming off of ACL and MCL surgery and leads the team in shot-put and discus throwing. He has a shot put throw of 48 feet 2 inches, and a discus toss of 125 feet 11 inches. He won the Wartburg and Luther indoor track meet. He wasn’t even supposed to be able to throw this year with his knee injury.

Ben is also his class valedictorian, and homecoming king.

Olivia Lofgren
Iowa City West
Tennis

Olivia is a senior and the top-ranked singles player on the West tennis team and also part of the doubles team. She was a first-team all-conference selection last year as a junior, and placed 2nd at the regionals last year. She’s off to a solid start to her senior season.

Her biggest accomplishments are off the tennis court, where she is tirelessly involved in community service, volunteer work, etc. Her good friend Caroline Found was killed last fall in a moped accident, and Olivia basically started the ‘Live like Line’ campaign in honor of Caroline. She is also active with the Iowa legislature in working to pass a helmet law for teens under the age of 18 that they have to wear a helmet when riding a moped or scooter. The campaign is called ‘Hope for a Helmet.’

Alexa Mitchell
Cedar Rapids Kennedy
Tennis

Alexa is off to a great start for her senior season of tennis. She won the Vance Fuller invite and the Top Gun invite in Waterloo. She’s undefeated so far on the year. This is her first full year on the varsity, but she lettered the other years.
