Ophoff sweeps the hurdles

CEDAR RAPIDS — Brandon Ophoff has adopted a more technical approach to hurdling.

“Last year, I didn’t have any sort of step count,” he said. “I just got after it.

“Now, with the 400(-meter hurdles), I try to be at 15 steps between each hurdle. It helps you judge the race a little better, so you can make adjustments. If I’m jumping off my right foot every time, that’s a good thing.”

Ophoff exhibited a lot of goodness — OK, greatness — at the Ask Relays on Saturday at Kingston Stadium.

The senior from Linn-Mar swept the individual hurdling events, winning the 110 highs in 14.69 seconds and the 400 lows in 55.47. He led off Linn-Mar’s winning shuttle hurdle relay, as well as the second-place 1,600-meter relay.

“I was happy with all my hurdle races,” said Ophoff, who will compete for Iowa State next year. “It went well.”

They used the unconventional “true team scoring” Saturday, but no matter how you sliced it, Iowa City West was the best team in attendance.

The Trojans won just three events, but still compiled 330 points to win the seven-team competition. Linn-Mar was second with 303 points, followed by Bettendorf (264.5) and Cedar Rapids Washington (256).

Had the meet been scored traditionally, West would have outscored Linn-Mar, 137-118.

West’s Armando Williams breezed to the 200-meter title in 22.72 seconds, pulling past Washington’s Will Griffin down the stretch.

“He’s been beating me since my sophomore year,” said Williams, now a senior. “If you can beat Will Griffin, you’re going to be right in the mix.”

Williams anchored the Trojans’ winning 400-meter relay. Tavian Smith, Andrew Gilbaugh, Richard Bryant and Williams were clocked in 43.10 seconds.

“Just staying relaxed, that’s the key to track,” Williams said.

Dondre Alexander was West’s other champion, clearing 6-3 to capture the high jump.

Linn-Mar matched Bettendorf with five events won. Ophoff figured into three of them. Matt Simon anchored the Lions from behind to win the 3,200 relay in 8:04.98. And Josh Evans captured the 1,600 in 4:31.16.

Evans entered the final lap in third place before pushing past a pair of West runners.

“They came by me, but I stuck with them,” Evans said. “I went down the backstretch, and I still had some power left.”

Washington’s Nicolas Corbett was a double-champion, winning the 400 in 50.78 seconds and anchoring the Warrior’s triumphant 1,600 relay.

Other Metro champions were Kennedy’s Derek Jacobus (long jump), Jefferson’s Timauntay Jones (800) and Prairie’s medley relay.
