Ankeny shuts down Saints, 39-25

DES MOINES — Ankeny’s dynamic defense claimed another victim Wednesday afternoon.

The fourth-ranked Hawkettes stymied No. 5 Cedar Rapids Xavier at virtually every turn, ousting the Saints, 39-25,¬†in a Class 4A quarterfinal at the girls’ state basketball tournament at Wells Fargo Arena.

“They have a big team, and our strength is getting up and down the floor,” Xavier’s Kayla Armstrong said. “We got caught in a half-court game.”

Ankeny (21-3) will face No. 1 Southeast Polk in a semifinal at 1:45 Friday afternoon. The Rams (24-1) ran past Ames, 56-37, Wednesday.

The Hawkettes’ calling card is basically what it’s always been — a deliberate offense and a stifling defense that holds the opposition down to the tune of a 4A-best 32.5 points per game.

University of Oklahoma recruit Maddie Manning scored a game-high 18 points, and Ankeny enjoyed an 18-1 advantage at the free throw line.

“(Xavier) played aggressive defense on me, and when the other team does that, you have to take it at them,” Manning said. “When you do that, you can draw contact or get a basket or get the ball to a teammate for a shot.”

It was not a matter of deer-in-headlights for Xavier, which retired at 18-6. The Saints were competitive early, matching the Hawkettes basket for basket in the first quarter and stood in an 8-8 deadlock through eight minutes.

The turning point came in the second quarter, shortly after Emily Walvoord took an elbow to the eye and lost a contact. By the time Walvoord returned, the Saints were facing a deficit.

“That lessened our ability to keep fresh posts in the game,” Xavier Coach Tom Lilly said.

Ankeny held a 19-11 halftime lead. The Saints got within 23-17 with 4:20 remaining in the third quarter when Walvoord scored via a long pass by Annie Dale, but they didn’t score again for nearly 8 minutes, and Ankeny tallied 12 straight points for an 18-point bulge.

“We just kind of let everything get to our head,” said Walvoord, who led the Saints with eight points. Armstrong, Dale and Alex Bartz added four points apiece.

Katlyn Andersen, who led Xavier this season at 9.2 points per game, was scoreless Wednesday.

Lilly and Ankeny Coach Scott DeJong exchanged brief pleasantries in the press room.

“It was kind of what we thought it would be,” DeJong said. “We knew it would be hard-fought and kind of ugly.”

Lilly said, “We’d have had to have played a lot better to have beaten them, but Ankeny had a lot to do with that.

“They deserved everything they got.”
