TAMA — No in-depth analysis necessary on this one. West Marshall simply made more shots.

North Linn suffered through a 26-percent shooting output from the field and fell to the Trojans, 53-40, in a Class 2A girls’ basketball regional final Monday night at Meskwaki Settlement School.

Jen Davis scored 18 points as West Marshall (20-5) advanced to the state tournament. The Trojans will face top-ranked Ida Grove OA-BCIG in a 2A quarterfinal next Monday at Wells Fargo Arena, Des Moines.

The defending-champion Falcons (25-0) toppled Lawton-Bronson, 59-51, Monday.

“I think we defended (North Linn) really well, especially in the first half,” said Trojans Coach Fred Zeller. “They have a good team, good athletes, but our kids recognized their shooters pretty well.”

North Linn (22-4) erased a 15-point deficit to advance past Grundy Center in the regional semifinals. But there was no comeback this time. The Lynx fought hard, but didn’t shoot well enough.

“We came out a little tentative,” said Lynx Coach Brian Wheatley, whose team established a school record for wins this season. “We couldn’t finish. We couldn’t get the ball in the hole.”

West Marshall built a 17-point lead early in the third quarter. North Linn got within 46-37 after a five-point, 18-second spree by freshman Nicole Miller, but that’s as close as the Lynx got.

Miller finished with 16 points and 12 rebounds, the vast majority of it after West Marshall had built a healthy lead. Brenna Winn added seven points and matched Miller with 12 boards.

North Linn built a 45-31 rebounding advantage, but couldn’t cash in on their second and third chances. Eighteen turnovers was part of the reason. Subpar shooting was most of it.

Amanda Aberle, the Lynx’s top scorer this season, was held to two points on 1-of-11 shooting. Winn was 2-for-12, Laura Moorman 1-for-6.

North Linn made one shot in 14 attempts from behind the 3-point arc.

“I don’t know if I’d say we were extremely nervous. Usually we turn that nervous energy into adrenalin,” Winn said. “I don’t know what happened.

“We made some (bad) passes. We needed to be stronger with the ball.”

Davis has no issues with strength. The bulky sophomore scored 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting. Sydney Beals came off the bench to add 11.

“We scored one inside basket in the whole game (in the regional semifinals against Gilbert),” Zeller said. “We saw some things that made me think we could have a good game inside.”

North Linn got out to a 6-2 lead, but it didn’t last long. The Trojans scored the next 10 points, led 12-10 after a quarter, and stayed in front the rest of the way.

Beals capped an 11-2 run at the end of the half with an offensive rebound and three-point play as the Trojans took a 28-16 lead into the locker room. It was 33-16 two minutes into the second half before the Lynx could establish any footing.
