CEDAR RAPIDS – The Xavier Saints girls’ basketball squad sits second in the Mississippi Valley Conference Valley Division standings and is ranked No. 5 in the state of Iowa.
With a record of 10-5 in the MVC and 15-5 overall, the Saints are en route to postseason play.
“After all the hard work we put in over the summer and throughout the season, we are very excited to see what we can do in the post season,” junior Kayla Armstrong said.
The Saints and the Dubuque Hempstead Mustangs faced off on Tuesday at Xavier’s Ron Thillen Gymnasium. The Saints got out to a fast start, building a 36-12 lead at the end of the first half. The Mustangs could never get out of the hole, losing 55-29. Senior Katlyn Andersen led the Saints with 17 points and junior Kayla Armstrong contributed 13. Brittani Graves led the Mustangs (3-12, 6-13) in scoring with a total of 11 points.
“We are playing well at the end of the season which is what we need to do to go far in postseason play,” senior Emily Walvoord said.
Xavier hosts Prairie in a boy-girl double header tonight. The boys’ game will start at 6 p.m. followed by the girls’ game at 7:30. Tonight is also Senior Night at Xavier so all senior Xavier basketball players, both boys and girls, will be honored along with the senior Saints cheerleaders.
