Nick Fuller
Independence
Wrestling
Fuller is ranked second at 170 lbs in Class 2A. He won the WAMAC Conference title over the weekend, pinning every opponent, including fourth-ranked JJ Hanus of Solon in the finals. Fuller has a 43-1 record on the year. He was a state runner-up last year. He owns a 3.9 GPA, and is in the national honor society.
Marcus Paige
Linn-Mar
Basketball
Linn-Mar is 11-2 and ranked third in Class 4A. Paige will play for the University of North Carolina next year. He scored a career-high 46 points in a 68-67 come-from-behind win over Cedar Rapids Prairie last Friday. The Lions trailed by as many as 20 in the second half. Paige broke the school’s single game scoring record, previously held by Jason Bohannon. On the season he’s averaging 28 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals per game. He’s shooting 53 percent from the floor, and 47 percent from 3-point range.
Paige leads Class 4A in scoring, averaging 28 points a game. The second-highest is 21. He’s also an 83 percent free throw shooter.
JC Vercande
Williamsburg
Wrestling
Vercande is ranked fifth in Class 2A at 145 pounds. He has a 43-1 record on the year. JC is secondin Williamsburg history in career wins, trailing only Austin Blythe. He won the WAMAC conference title over the weekend. Vercande has been to state all three years, placing 8th as a freshman, 6th as a sophomore, and 6th as a junior.
