Former Linn-Mar football players asked to gather with Coach Purnell

Former Linn-Mar football coach Greg Purnell is asking his former players to gather informally Friday night after his induction into the Linn-Mar athletics hall of fame.

Players and well-wishers can meet Purnell at Happy Joe’s Pizza across from Lindale Mall in northeast Cedar Rapids at 8 p.m. He coached at Linn-Mar from 1981 until 1999, taking 13 teams to the playoffs and five to the state championship game.

The Lions won state titles in 1985, 1989 and 1990.

Purnell now coaches at St. Francis High School in the Chicago suburbs, where he has won an Illinois state championship.

  1. Congratulations coach. A recognition well deserved. Duane

  2. Greg, you are most deserving of this honor. Those years you were at Linn Mar were very special and I am glad Eric was a member of 3 of those teams. You are a winner! All the best.

  3. Congratulations Coach! This recognition is well deserved! You are an exceptional coach and it was an honor to play for you.
