Rivalry Saturday: Down 11, Monticello scrambles past Lynx

CEDAR RAPIDS — Good bye, “downer.”

Hello, spoiler.

Monticello erased an 11-point third-quarter deficit and edged Class 2A 15th-ranked North Linn, 45-42,┬áin a Tri-Rivers Conference girls’ basketball game at Rivalry Saturday at Washington High School.

“The last two games had been a real downer for us,” said Jordan Aitchison, who led the Panthers (12-3 overall, 8-3 Tri-Rivers) with 12 points. “We wanted to get a win tonight to show we’re improved and capable of some big things at the end of the season.”

The game was the first in a long time for all-stater Brooke Stahlberg, who has missed the majority of the season with a wrist injury. She scored nine points, came up with six steals and hit two key free throws in the final half-minute.

“That was a huge spark for us,” said Monticello Coach Donnie Kremer. “Brooke really changes the defensive matchups and gives us a great defensive presence.”

Saturday’s outcome made the Tri-Rivers picture a lot clearer. North Linn (15-2, 10-2) fell two games behind Maquoketa Valley.

North Linn looked safe midway through the third quarter. Nicole Miller’s basket made it 33-22, but the Lynx went stale from there.

Aitchison’s 3-pointer got the Panthers even at 36-36 with 4:20 go, then Taylor Aitchison put the Panthers ahead with a drive to the basket moments later.

Jordan Aitchison’s trey gave Monticello the lead for good, 43-40, with 1:30 left. Miller’s steal and layup got the Lynx within a point, but North Linn’s final three possessions resulted in turnovers. The Lynx coughed it up 24 times Saturday.

Paxtyn Keleher added 10 points for Monticello. Becca Dirks posted eight points and 11 rebounds.

Miller, a freshman, paced North Linn with 12 points. Amanda Aberle added 11.
