Johnson leads 2011 Hall of Famers

CEDAR RAPIDS — Alicia Johnson has gone from state volleyball fixture to volleyball Famer.

A four-time state finalist at Tripoli High School, Johnson headlines the 2011 IGHSAU Volleyball Hall of Fame class, which will be inducted Saturday.

She’ll be joined by Megan Schipper of Aplington-Parkersburg and Jessica Vander Kooi of Hinton.

Johnson was a two-time Class 1A state player of the year, leading the Panthers to 1A state championships in 2003, 2004 and 2005. They were runners-up in 2002, Johnson’s freshman year. She is the school’s career leader in kills, aces, digs and blocks.

She played college volleyball at Iowa, Northwest Missouri State and Southern Illinois. At her last stop, she was an all-Missouri Valley Conference all-academic selection as a senior.

Schipper led Aplington-Parkersburg to three state appearances, winning the 2005 Class 2A. She earned elite all-state honors twice and was the 2A player of the year as a senior. She was a full-time starter at Iowa as a junior and a senior.

Vander Kooi was a three-time all-stater at Hinton, earning elite all-state honors as a senior, when she averaged 4.13 kills a set. She starred at the University of Missouri, earning all-Big 12 honors three times and still ranks in the top five in 11 different statistical categories.

The trio will be honors between the 2A and 1A championship matches, around 5 p.m.

On the tube

Saturday’s championship matches will be televised live at both a television and an online outlet in the SourceMedia family.

KCRG 9.3 (Channel 110 on Mediacom) will have the 4A and 3A matches at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., while KCRG 9.2 (109 on Mediacom) will have the 2A and 1A title matches at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
