IOWA CITY — Iowa City Regina leans heavily on the run, and, with a talented backfield, for good reason. But do not accuse the Regals of having a one-dimensional attack.
Regina delivered straight-forward running and over-the-top passing to defeat Davis County, 59-9, in a Class 2A first-round playoff game at Regina Wednesday night.
Regina entered the game with 242 rushing and 90 passing attempts. Early on against Davis County, Regina (9-0) signaled it would follow the same conservative formula.
“We’re a zone read team and run some play action off of it,” said Regina offensive coordinator Ed Hinkel. “We like to stay balanced but take what the defense gives us.”
Joe McCaffery and Jacob Vollstedt split carries on the first series, a seven-play, 52-yard scoring drive.
Davis County came out throwing, knowing it had to score a lot of points, and not just because of the opponent. Davis County (6-4) had scored 30 points or more in each win this season.
Calvin Utt completed four passes to Mylo Wells on the opening drive, which lasted nearly six minutes. But on 3rd-and-goal at the Regina 4-yard line, Davis County was called for delay of game. Wells kicked a 25-yard field goal.
Vollstedt responded by barreling through the middle and free for a 67-yard touchdown run.
“I hit it full speed,” Vollstedt said. “If it hit’s the end zone, it’s a bonus.”
A bobbled snap on a punt set up Regina in excellent field position. McCaffery ran three times for 29 yards and a touchdown. The quarterback Nate Streb, who has completed 48-of-71 passes with 15 touchdowns and zero interceptions this season, started showing his stuff.
Streb looked over the middle and found George Sehl, who sprinted to a 63-yard touchdown. On Regina’s next play, Streb hit a streaking McCaffery, who accelerated for a 57-yard score. And, 2 minutes later, on 3-and-1, Streb, on a play-action pass, connected with Alex Balke for a 43-yard touchdown.
For good measure, Streb, who like Vollstedt and McCaffery also plays on defense, intercepted a pass. On the ensuing possession, Streb faked a handoff and scrambled around the right end for a 15-yard touchdown.
