Iowa City West shocks No. 2 Cedar Falls

By Jim Sullivan, Waterloo Courier

CEDAR FALLS – Second-ranked Cedar Falls lost for the first time this season Friday night, as Iowa City West beat the Tigers, 21-10, at the UNI-Dome.

Quarterback Charles Rogers led the Trojans to their seventh win in nine games. Rogers ran for first-half touchdowns of six and one yard. A blocked punt set up his initial TD run.

Rogers, though, proved tough to stop. He rushed for 146 yards and passed for 157 more.

Anthony Brown also scored on a 3-yard run for the Trojans.

Jacob Fagersten kicked a 41-yard field goal and backup quarterback Grant Grainger hit James Harrington with a 54-yard touchdown pass in the second half for Cedar Falls (8-1). But the Tigers missed several good chances to find the end zone in the opening two quarters.

Cedar Falls’ best opportunity came after Barkley Hill reeled off a 60-yard run that – coupled with a West penalty – put the Tigers at the Trojan 8. But, on fourth down from the 1, the Trojan defense stopped Hill short of the goal line.

Thus, Cedar Falls trailed by a 14-0 margin at the break.

The Tigers also lost starting quarterback Ike Boettger to a back injury when he was slammed to the turf while passing in the first half.

Hill finished with 176 yards rushing for Cedar Falls.

  1. This is what happens when your schedule is filled with Dubuque schools rather that other MVC foes. Light schedules that don’t prepare you for the stronger teams in the conference. This has been going on for years!
