4A East football playoff projections

Linn-Mar's Kevin Bogert (left) and Quinn Treiber (right) congratulate quarterback Mark Atwater on his touchdown during the Lions' 17-12 win over Iowa City High on Friday. Should the Lions win next week, they'll probably by the No. 1 seed for the playoffs in the east side of the state in Class 4A. (Jim Slosiarek/The Gazette)

Fifteen down, one to go.

Only one spot in the Class 4A east-side playoffs derby remains unclaimed.

Clinton (3-5) has the inside track. The River Kings are playoff-bound if they defeat Pleasant Valley in the final week of the regular season Friday.

Should Clinton fall (and Pleasant Valley is the favorite), it could open the door for Cedar Rapids Prairie. The Hawks play at Iowa City High. If Clinton loses and the Hawks win, they are in.

If both lose, the bid reverts back to Clinton, even if the River Kings and Dubuque Hempstead tie at 3-6 and 310 points.

That clarifies the bottom of the lineup. How about the top?

Linn-Mar (8-0) most likely earns the No. 1 seed if it wins at Cedar Rapids Xavier. The MVC Mississippi Division-champion Lions are projected to score 430 points, Cedar Falls (8-0) is projected at 425.

The Tigers host Iowa City West (6-2), with the winner earning the Valley Division crown.

Regarding the 10, 11 and 12 seeds: Cedar Rapids Xavier, Dubuque Wahlert and Cedar Rapids Kennedy all would finish with 5-4 records and 355 points. Xavier would have the top strength of schedule (opponents’ records of 46-35), followed by 45-36 for Wahlert and 39-42 for Kennedy.

Here are projected first-round matchups, with this week’s results projected by the BC Moore rankings:

#16 CLINTON (3-6, 310 points) at #1 LINN-MAR (9-0, 430 points)

#9 CEDAR RAPIDS WASHINGTON (6-3, 370 points) at #8 IOWA CITY WEST (6-3, 375 points)

————–

#12 CEDAR RAPIDS KENNEDY (5-4, 355 points) at #5 IOWA CITY HIGH (7-2, 395 points)

#13 MUSCATINE (5-4, 345 points) at #4 NORTH SCOTT (8-1, 405 points)

—————————————-

#11 DUBUQUE WAHLERT (5-4, 355 points) at #6 PLEASANT VALLEY (7-2, 385 points)

#14 WATERLOO EAST (5-4, 345 points) at #3 BETTENDORF (8-1, 405 points)

————–

#10 CEDAR RAPIDS XAVIER (5-4, 355 points) at #7 DAVENPORT ASSUMPTION (7-2, 385 points)

#15 DAVENPORT CENTRAL (4-5, 330 points) at #2 CEDAR FALLS (9-0, 425 points)

  1. Curious to see what happens if there are no undefeated teams in the East>

  2. “Curious to see what happens if there are no undefeated teams in the East”

A big confusing mess at the top.

  3. If LM and CF lost, top 4 seeds would have same records but due to toughness of schedule, LM would still hang onto the 1 seed. But CF would fall to the 4 seed.

  4. is it just me, or does it look like the #2 seed would have it easier than the #1 seed?

  5. if Kennedy beats Wahlert like they are projecting, how would Wahlert get a higher seed if they lost the head to head?

    • If Xavier, Wahlert and Kennedy all finish at 5-4 and 355, then the next tie-breaker is opponent’s W-L pct. If (and that’s a big if) all games go the way the compute projects, Xavier’s opponents would be 46-35, Wahlert 45-36 and Kennedy 39-42. There is no head-to-head between the three since Wahlert and Xavier did not play. You can’t put them in order just because Xavier beat Kennedy and (IF!) Kennedy beats Wahlert.

      • I always thought this was kind of silly, but that’s how they break three-way ties. In my opinion, at least, once you get one team out of the tie, head-to-head should come into play. But, it doesn’t, unless the two teams left are still tied by opponents’ record.

  6. whats the best case senario for Kennedy?

    • Best CRK can do is the 11 seed. And that is only if CRW gets upset by W.West and CRK beats Wahlert. CRW would fall to the 12 seed and CRX, Wahlert, and CRK would move up one spot.

  7. Charles, if CRX was able to beat LM and assuming all other games went as projected, CRX would move up to the 9 seed playing at IC West and CRW would fall to the 10 seed playing at Assumption.

  8. If Kennedy beats Wahlert, and Dubuque Senior can defeat Waterloo East, Kennedy would get the 10 seed and probably play at Davenport Assumption. I think that’s the best they can do. Barring some kind of crazy upset like LinnMar or Bettendorf or Wash losing, that is.

    • KidSilver, you are correct. I missed the Wat East loss giving them a losing record thus costing Wahlert and CRX points. CRK can get to the 9 seed with a Wat East loss and a CRW loss.
