Ken Hanzlik, a volunteer strength coach, yells instructions as the CR Prairie football team warms up at the beginning of practice on Tuesday August 30, 2005 at Prairie High School in Cedar Rapids.
CEDAR RAPIDS – The Cedar Rapids Prairie football program honored late strength and conditioning coach Kenny Hanzlik Thursday, placing a black-and-orange sticker with his initials on the players’ helmets.
The dedication includes a sticker of an orange football and KH in black letters to memorialize Hanzlik, who served as the Hawks’ strength and conditioning coach for 13 years.
Hanzlik died in May at the age of 75, taking over the strength and conditioning coach post under former head coach Craig Jelinek, who resigned after last season and was replaced by new coach Mike Morrissey. Hanzlik graduated from Wilson High School, and became an assistant when he retired after 40 years of service for the City of Cedar Rapids.
Know that we wouldnt be the men we are today without your guidance throughout our high school career. Thank you for each and every second of your free time that you gave up to spend with us. Words cannot begin to describe what you meant to the Prairie Football Program and more importantly what your presence and guidance meant to each of us as we grew from boys to men. Miss ya Coach, RIP.
This is such a wonderful surprise for my family! My dad bled black and orange. He gave so much to Prairie, but he would tell you that he got more in return. He loved those boys. We found out on this day one year ago that he had cancer again, so this has extra significance today. This is why I love the Prairie Family. Go Hawks!
I remember when he first started volunteering at Prairie and he was afraid the “kids” wouldn’t listen to a guy his age. What a difference he made in so many kids in the athletic fields (not just football!) at Prairie. He was the best they could ask for! A part of him will go onto that football field every Friday night with the Prairie Hawks.
This is a well deserved honor from a man who changed so many lives over the course of his 13 years at Prairie. We’ll never forget you coach thanks for everything.
great read- sad to lose such a great guy
