Girls state basketball: Wednesday's games

Wednesday’s games at the girls’ state basketball tournament at Wells Fargo Arena, Des Moines:

CLASS 4A QUARTERFINAL

#6 Cedar Rapids Washington (19-3) vs. #3 Iowa City West (21-2)

Time: 10 a.m.

Coaches: Frank Howell has a 268-134 record in 17 years, including 147-45 in eight seasons at Washington. He coached Audubon to the 2A title in 1999. B.J. Mayer owns a 188-112 mark in 13 years, including 61-32 in four seasons at West.

Key players: Dartmouth recruit Tia Dawson (6-2, sr.) leads Washington at 11.5 points and 10.4 rebounds per game. Jazz Royster (5-10, jr.) adds 9.0 points per game. Ally Disterhoft (5-11, soph.) scores 15.1 points per game for West while Mckenzie Piper (6-0, jr.) adds 12.0 points and 5.3 rebounds per contest.

Tournament history: Washington is making its 11th appearance. The Warriors won championships in 1988 and 1995. West is a first-time qualifier.

CLASS 4A QUARTERFINAL

#2 Linn-Mar (21-2) vs. #10 Ankeny (20-3)

Time: 11:45 a.m.

Coaches: Mike Brandt has a 168-64 mark in 10 years at Linn-Mar. Scott DeJong owns a 23-year mark of 470-107, including 346-93 in 18 years at Ankeny.

Key players: Kiah Stokes (6-3, sr.) is the state’s leading scorer at 25.2 points per game. She also averages 15.1 rebounds per game and is the state’s all-time leading shot blocker. Jenna Eells (5-6, sr.) adds 8.6 points per game. Ankeny’s starting five is comprised of four juniors and a sophomore, led by Maddie Manning (6-1, jr., 16.2 ppg).

Tournament history: Linn-Mar has qualified for the sixth time and the fourth year in a row. The Lions won state titles in 1985 and 2010. Ankeny has won 10 championships, and this marks the school’s 24th appearance.

OTHER GAMES

Class 4A quarterfinal: #5 Southeast Polk (22-2) vs. #13 Mason City (19-5), 1:30 p.m.

Class 4A quarterfinal: #9 Waukee (19-5) vs. #1 Des Moines East (23-0), 5 p.m.

Class 1A semifinal: #1 Martensdale-St. Marys (24-2) vs. #5 West Hancock (25-1), 6:45 p.m.

Class 1A semifinal: Bellevue Marquette (16-6) vs. #2 Ar-We-Va (23-2), 8:30 p.m.
