Girls state basketball tournament: Tuesday’s games

Tuesday’s games at the girls’ state basketball tournament at Wells Fargo Arena, Des Moines


#10 South Tama (22-2) vs. #1 Ballard (23-1)

Time: 5 p.m.

Coaches: Nate Roberts, a 1995 South Tama grad, is 42-26 in three years at his alma mater. Merle Olberding is 366-72 in 18 years at Ballard.

Key players: Madison Baier (6-4, jr.) paces a young South Tama squad at 12.4 points and 8.8 rebounds per game. Dia Keahna (5-7, soph.) adds 9.9 points per game. Stanford recruit Taylor Greenfield (6-2, sr.) leads Ballard at 20.2 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. Sammy Jensen (5-5, sr.) adds 11.3 points per game.

Tournament history: South Tama has qualified in the five-player game for the first time. The Trojans were 6-on-6 entrants in 1989 and 1990. Ballard is making its 11th appearance and its sixth in a row. The Bombers were 3A champions in 2009.


#13 Benton Community (20-4) vs. #2 Mount Vernon (22-2)

Time: 8:30 p.m.

Coaches: Laurie Donald is 108-51 in seven years at Benton Community. Bob Kintzel has posted an 83-13 mark in four years at Mount Vernon.

Key players: Madison Weekly (5-6, soph.) averages 16.0 points per game to lead Benton; Katie Kullmer (5-11, sr.) adds 9.4 ppg. Taylor Dicus (6-2, sr.) and Amanda Platte (6-1, sr.) pace Mount Vernon at 12.6 and 12.3 points per game, respectively.

Tournament history: Benton has qualified for the first time in school history. Mount Vernon won the 2A championship last year and is a three-time qualifier.


Class 2A quarterfinal: West Fork (21-3) vs. #2 Roland-Story (24-1), 10 a.m.

Class 2A quarterfinal: Pella Christian (20-4) vs. Estherville-Lincoln Central (21-4), 11:45 a.m.

Class 3A quarterfinal: #5 Sergeant Bluff-Luton (23-2) vs. #4 Davenport Assumption (22-2), 1:30 p.m.

Class 3A quarterfinal: #6 DeWitt Central (22-2) vs. #3 MOC-Floyd Valley (25-0), 5 p.m.
