Girls state basketball: Monday's games

Monday’s games at the girls’ state basketball tournament, at Wells Fargo Arena, Des Moines:


#8 Monticello (24-1) vs. #4 Mount Ayr (22-2)

Time: 8:30 p.m.

Coaches: Donnie Kremer is 152-64 in nine years at Monticello. He led the Panthers to their first conference title in school history this year. Thad Streit owns a mark of 81-15 in four years at Mount Ayr.

Key players: Brooke Stahlberg (5-7, jr.) leads Monticello at 12.4 points per game. Kelsie Etten (5-9, sr.) adds 8.5 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. Mount Ayr possesses four double-digit scorers, led by Becca Pennington (5-7, sr.) at 15.1 points per game and Jensen Stewart (5-6, sr.) at 13.8 ppg.

Tournament history: Monticello is at state for the third time; the Panthers qualified in 2007 and 2008). Last year’s 1A state runner-up, Mount Ayr has qualified for the fourth time.


Class 1A quarterfinal: Newell-Fonda (14-10) vs. #1 Martensdale-St. Marys (23-2), 10 a.m.

Class 1A quarterfinal: #5 West Hancock (24-1) vs. #7 Bedford (21-4), 11:45 a.m.

Class 1A quarterfinal: #6 North Mahaska (23-2) vs. Bellevue Marquette (15-6), 1:30 p.m.

Class 1A quarterfinal: #9 Lynnville-Sully (20-4) vs. #2 Ar-We-Va (22-2), 5 p.m.

Class 2A quarterfinal: #11 IKM-Manning (19-4) vs. #1 Ida Grove OA-BCIG (23-0), 6:45 p.m.
