Women of Troy state-bound for first time

Iowa City West 46, Bettendorf 33

Tatum Klein and Ally Disterhoft scored 11 points apiece to lead Class 4A third-ranked Iowa City West to a 46-33 regional final victory over Bettendorf last night at Muscatine.

Jessica Shull added nine points and Shelly Stumpff chipped in with seven in a balanced offensive attack for the Women of Troy (21-2).

Megan Hayes scored a game-high 19 points for Bettendorf, which ends its season at 17-6.

West will face Cedar Rapids Washington in a quarterfinal matchup at 10 a.m. March 2 in Des Moines.

Southeast Polk 67, Iowa City High 53

Virginia Johnson posted a 12-point, 11-rebound double-double, but the Iowa City High could not hold a one-point halftime lead in a Class 4A Region 3 loss to Southeast Polk at Newton.

Caitlin Ingle scored a game-high 27 points and Whitney Van Wyk added 18 for the fifth-ranked Rams, now 22-2.

Mickey Hansche scored a team-high 14 points to lead the Little Hawks, who bow out at 17-6.

Mount Vernon 64, Waverly-Shell Rock 47

Liz Skotowski scored 16 points to lead four Mount Vernon players in double-figures as the defending Class 2A champion Mustangs punched their ticket for this year’s Class 3A tournament with a regional final win over Waverly-Shell Rock at Vinton.

Skotowski made only three field goals, including two 3-points, but was 8-for-9 at the free-throw line. Amanda Platte added 15 points, Micah Wieditz 13, and Taylor Dicus 11 for Mount Vernon (22-2), which will face Benton Community in a first-round state tournament game at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

Benton Community 46, Pella 43

Katie Kullmer scored a team-high 15 points as Class 3A 13th-ranked Benton Community upended ninth-ranked Pella in a regional final at Grinnell.

Madison Weekly added 13 points for the Bobcats (20-4), which qualified for the state tournament for the first time since consolidation. Van Horne won the title in 1962.

Makenzie VanderMolen scored a game-high 18 points to lead the Little Dutch, who finish the year at 18-3.

Davenport Assumption 82, Washington 54

Four players scored in double figures for Class 3A fourth-ranked Davenport Assumption (22-2) in a regional final win at Tipton.

Danielle Moore scored 14 points and Kate Fennelly added 13 to lead Assumption. Davenport will play Sergeant Bluff-Luton next Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. in a quarterfinal matchup in Des Moines.

Jena Krebs scored 17 points to lead all scorers, while teammate Cassie Holland added 15 for Washington (19-6).

  1. Just to clarify that Amanda was the player who scored 15 points and not Hanna Geigerich. Great job mustangs and make us proud at state!!!

  4. I wish they would not do State brackets until after Regionals:
    should be:
    Mason City/SEP
    Linn Mar/Waukee
    IC WEst/Ankeny
    CR Wash/DM East

    or some such. Point is to match teams that haven’t played each other, PLUS a bit of seeding…

    In the above list, you might swap around a bit and still achieve some ‘new’ matchups.

    Instead, Wash and West play again, and East/Waukee play again.

    Oh well, is what it is.

    Go watch SEP/MC…the two best young guards in Iowa.
