CEDAR RAPIDS – Advantage, Jack Hathaway.
The Iowa City West junior has a little good-natured competition with teammate Justin Koethe. The two standout wrestlers try to out perform the other, attempting to score the most pins and team points. Hathaway has the edge and added to it Saturday.
Hathaway pinned his way through the field and Koethe scored two falls before winning by decision as both won their third Mississippi Valley Conference title, helping West cruise to its eighth straight team championship Saturday at Cedar Rapids Xavier. West crowned seven champions, tallying 264.5 points.
Hathaway scored three first period falls, decking Dubuque Wahlert’s Greg Vance in 46 seconds for the 125-pound title. Koethe wrestled about 30 seconds in his first two matches, beating Iowa City High’s eighth-ranked Brent Hamm, 5-1, for the title at 160.
Hathaway said the two try to one-up the other every week. It is a way to add fun and push one another.
“We come off the mat and look at each other,” Koethe said. “if someone doesn’t get a pin, we just mess around with each other.”
Both took steps closers to join a select group of four-time MVC champions. Hathaway made quick work of his foe, but Koethe had to wrestle the full six minutes for just the eighth time this season. Koethe scored takedowns in the first and third period to top Hamm.
“I thought he wrestled pretty good,” Koethe said. “He was defensive. he didn’t really do anything offensive, so he slowed me down a bit.”
Koethe said conference titles won’t mean a lot until he completes the sweep and Hathaway is focused on the title neither have won.
“The conference doesn’t bother me,” Hathaway said. “I’m all about state.”
Hathaway leads Koethe in falls (31-18), but the competition will be settled by who wins the first championship in Des Moines.
“We’ll see when state comes around,” Koethe said. “it goes to whoever places higher.”
West dominated the MVC, placing nine in the finals. Top-ranked Phillip Laux (103), Kegan Wakefield (119), Dakota Bauer (130), Elijah Sullivan (140) and Britt Thompson each won for West. Momentum rolls from one wrestler to the other.

“It’s pretty continuous,” Hathaway said. “We all go hard and do what we need to do.”
Cedar Rapids Prairie had four finalists, placing a distant second with 175.5 points. Zach Witte was the Hawks’ lone champion, while Trey Blaha (103), Jayden Flege (112) and Chris Walters (119) were runners-up. Most of the Hawks surpassed their tournament seeds and showed their balance with 13 of 14 wrestlers placing.
“We lost a few close matches we would have liked to have turned around, but overall I thought it was a pretty good effort,” Prairie Coach Blake Williams said. “We were able to get somebody in there at each weight and score some points. That’s big.”
Witte claimed his second MVC title in his third finals appearance with a 3-2 win over No. 5 Garrett Hathaway. Witte scored a takedown in the final minute to take control and improve to 31-0. The goal is to remain unbeaten, which would result in a state title.
“Anything’s possible,” Witte said. “That’s what I’m shooting for.”
Linn-Mar was one of three Metro schools to crown two champions. Mark Atwater (189) and A.J. Garcia (215) produced a pair of upsets that ignited the Linn-mar fans.
Atwater, returning from a thumb injury, dropped West’s sixth-ranked Mickey Pelfrey, 3-2, scoring a takedown in the final 25 seconds. Garcia topped his teammate’s feat by knocking off top-ranked Conner Herman, 9-3, for his title.
“It means a lot,” said Garcia, a 2010 state qualifier who is currently ranked eighth. “It’s a big steppingstone for what I have ahead of me at district and state.”
Garcia had two takedowns and a key reversal before adding three back points late. As the match wore on, Garcia seemed to get stronger. the win was enough to earn Outstanding Wrestler honors voted on by coaches.
“Once I got that takedown it just motivated me,” Garcia said. “I had to keep going and do what I can do.”
Garcia, who beat City High’s No.9 Brad Gingerich, 6-4, with a last second takedown to advance to the finals, admitted he received a jolt from watching Atwater’s victory. He feeds off his teammates’ successes.
“It gives me a good adrenaline rush when my teammates do well and they win a lot,” said Garcia, who helped the Lions place third with 140 points.
Top-seeds Luke Kremer and Ryan Sheldon each won championships for Cedar Rapids Kennedy, which was fourth. Kremer won his second MVC title with a 4-1 win over Shane Broderick of Dubuque Wahlert at 135. Kremer beat Broderick, ranked sixth in 2A, in the finals last year and even beat him in overtime recently.
“I thought Kremer was better moving his feet, creating more opportunities to score,” Kennedy Coach Brent Paulson said. “We’ve worked on that this week.”

Kremer is top-ranked at 135 and improved to 33-3. He has been free of illness and injury which kept him out of the MVC as a freshman and hindered his progress last year.
“He’s been healthy this year,” Paulson said. “That’s been huge. he feels good.”
Sheldon pinned Xavier’s Peter Ickes in 3:52 at 171. Sheldon (35-1) pinned his way through the bracket to claim his first conference title. Paulson called it a “typical Ryan” performance.
“He’s beaten good kids along the way,” said Paulson, noting Sheldon hasn’t lost since the first weekend in December and 24 wins by major decision technical fall or pin. “He’s dominated some good kids along the way.”
Cedar Rapids Washington also crowned two champions. No. 10 Tyler Burrell held his top-seed capturing the crown at heavyweight with a 7-0 win over Xavier’s Chantz Rodriguez. Troy Neagle claimed the Warriors’ first title, however, winning the 112-pound championship.
Neagle surprised some, reaching the finals with an overtime pin of West’s ninth-ranked Ernest Willis. Neagle whipped Willis to his back, getting the fall in 6:59. He followed it by beating Prairie’s Jayden Flege, 12-3, in the finals, using two reversals to catch Flege on his back both times.
“Coach told me to go after it,” said Neagle, who improved to 23-12, “and I did it.”
Neagle lost two Willis and Flege on the same evening 16 days earlier. He was confident he could beat both. When he did he gave a mild two-handed fist pump, but then it sank in while he signed his bout sheet.
“I didn’t think too much after the match,” Neagle said. “Once I signed the paper I realized I was a conference champion.”
Xavier advanced three wrestlers to the championships. Braxton Chicchelly (130) joined Ickes and Rodriguez as runners-up.

Good job West High! Go West!
I thought the best match of the finals was Bauer and Chicchelly.
Congrats to Troy Neagle and Tyler Burrell!
Great showing by Kennedy. There’s going to be two Cougs on the top of the medal stand at Wells in a few weeks!
Also, congrats to Prairie on the conference championship. Ethics mean something.
Too bad ethics doesn’t make up 90 points
Hey Kennedy Fan well said! Prairie, Linn-Mar and Kennedy should be very proud of what they have built, not stolen i.e. IC West, but built!!
You know there is something wrong when the whole crowd erupted during the semi’s when the Wash kid stuck the West 112 pounder. That wasn’t only the Wash fans but the whole MVC minus the IC West(Cheaters)!
Warriorfan Bauer won but have you ever seen the winner get the crap beat out of him so bad like Chicchelly did to that “Superstar”??
WestFootball “Go West” Really? I mean Really?? Do you even know 1/2 the kids that wrestle for West? You must be soooooooooooo Proud!
Hawks, Lions and Cougars continue what you are doing! Good Stuff!
Braxton Chicchelly is a freak and not in a good way. He is a complete spaz, i hope a doctor or therapist puts him on some pills or something he needs help.
its nice to see some high schools competing against West (university). Although it seems West “stole,” the victory. West has great recruiting!
Northside you could say that for about 3/4′s of the Wrestlers in this state and Iowa, Coe, Wartburg etc. Wrestlers scare me a little!!!
Crazy!
Ha!
There were some great matches yesterday and well said Kennedy Fan.
If there is truth to the IC West football coach holding a wrestler accountable for breaking team rules nice to know that at least one of the IC West programs has ethics….
very true kohawk…
Yes really. I’m proud of my school and happy for the individuals that were involved.
But they are not from your school! They are a bunch of NOMADS and transfers that have nothing to do with you except for thier personal gain……………Nothing!
I feel sorry for the real ICW wrestlers!
Answer my question do you even know any of your “Superstars”??
Of course i do you prick
Hey Kohawk, your right, you know something is wrong when the whole crowd erupts when not only in the semis, but any time a WEST wrestler lost during the day.
Big John I have never seen anything like it!!
Its true that most wrestlers are crazy but Braxton has won a special place in my book of insanity. At the LM tourney he got a nose bleed wrestling an opponent and he yelled “No one makes me bleed my own blood!” (haha he quoted Dodgeball) or when he lost to Ross Lembeck and completely lost it.. throwing chairs, punching walls and doors, etc.
I know Iowa City West won by 90 points and had seven champions but I felt there was a better sense of balance in the league. 10 teams had finalists (ICW 9, CRP 4, CRK 3, CRX 3, CRW 2, DW 2, LM 2, CRJ 1, DH 1, ICH 1). When was the last time Xavier had more finalists than LM (I know that Northrup’s absence due to flu is a big reason)? CRW and DW had 4 finalists for the first time since when?
Prairie showed great balance with getting second by a good margin but only one champion.
On the flip side, how disappointing is wrestling in the Waterloo/Cedar Falls area when those three teams have no MVC finalists? These things are cyclical so hopefully those programs turn it around soon.
All in all, a very good day of wrestling. I’ll agree the Bauer and Chicchelly match was very exciting and a lot of action. neither were intimidated of the other. Good stuff.
Northside you have kind of made me sorry I was rooting for the guy! There is no place for that kind of crap in this sport!
Intense/Crazy does not = Idiot
Thanks for the Heads Up!
KJ, Iowa City should be as dissapointed as Cedar Falls Waterloo!!! In the hometown of the greatest college wrestling program in history they produced ONE FINALIST! That town SUCKS at wrestling, if it weren’t for recruits ICW would have been LAST!!! REILAND CAN’T COACH
… if you get a chance ask Brands if he’d prefer a Linn Mar wrestler over an ICW recruit!!
northside, get your facts straight. chiccchelly was having a problem loosing after a match but he has came a long way. did he do anything that was un sportsman like after he lost against bauer? i dont think so. it was a tough intense six minutes of wrestling and he did nothing “mental” or spaztic.” at linn mar when that freshman headbutted him intentionally three times i might add, he did nothing to retaliate. he got cleaned up and tech falled the kid. he never said “no one makes me bleed my own blood”.He’s pationate about the sport and hates to loose.. just like every other wrestler in the state. Hes intense but not a spaz so get your facts straight.
I happen to know that freshman and it wasn’t intentional. And he had to be held back by his own coaches after the match. By the way your spelling is awful.
I happen to have a series of pictures i took of those two and its blatent and intentional, Tell that freshamn to call or meet up with braxton i’m sure he would love to have a little chat with him.
Why would he have to be held by his coaches? Chicchelly flat out destroyed him, i mean i dont know but a tech fall seems like a butt kickin to me. He had no reason to even think he had the right to be upset after the match.
Northside your a dumbass, the kid from linn mar headbutted him on person because he had no chance of winning. I dont know a kid that works harder on the football field or in the wrestling room. He has emotion and thats great, he is one of a few guys that actually care about winning and putting their best possible effort on the mat.
well of course he destroyed him he’s a freshman JV wrestler. LOL he didn’t expect to win he’s not even on varsity. And you just proved what I already said with your comment about Braxton meeting up with the kid. Braxton had to be held back by his own coaches after the match so he wouldn’t go after his opponent. His reaction was pure comedy especially after his loss to LM’s varsity wrestler.
I am a proffesional therapist and I agree with northside’s comments about Chichelly. I concur with the assumption that he is a “spaz” and he deserves to be on 50mg of diazapam per week.
Boom Roasted..Bitch needs some meds
Northside you and Therapist made me laugh!! Funny Stuff!
Northside I am a Prairie guy so we will have fun going back and forth!!
MVC Fan ding, ding, ding!! You are correct on all accounts!! I think Mr.Brands would like the Linn-Mar kid over the “ICW” kid unless a Prairie kid was available of course!
Hey Therapist do I need help if I go psycho during a match dealing with a ICW Wrestler and everytime I want him to lose?? Can we do these sessions over the internet or do you need to see me in person??
Ha!
You guys just need to stop and get back to the point of the article.
Congrats PHS! Great effort by your team to get all those points with 4 guys in the finals and one champ. Linn Mar had some tremendous wins and KHS who didn’t have a full lineup. Wash: Neagle win over IC West. The excitement in the gym over that win was great! Fun to see two of the Ch. 9 Athletes of the week to sort it out on the mat not by votes.
what happened to Hamm at districts?
