In a trash bin, there is a garbage bag. In a garbage bag, there are hundreds of pieces of shredded paper.

On those hundreds of pieces of shredded paper are the worst fears documented by member of the volleyball team from Iowa City West.

The Women of Troy wrote them down, shredded them and left them behind. Then they did basically the same thing to Ankeny.

Third-ranked West played fearlessly and swept the No. 1 Hawkettes, 28-26, 25-23, 26-15, to win the Class 4A state championship Saturday afternoon at the U.S. Cellular Center.

“Coach (Kathy Bresnahan) had us write down our worst fear. Then we ripped them up, but them in a bag, threw it away and left it behind,” said setter Caroline Found.

Her worst fear?

“Don’t get scared.”

As was the case in its first two matches here this week, the Women of Troy (37-7) started slow. They trailed in the first set, 20-14, before surging.

“I think we relaxed more quickly today,” said Bresnahan, who earned her first title in 23 years of coaching (19 at West). “This is a nice exclamation point to our season.”

Lexi Potter’s kill got the Women of Troy even at 22-22, the Hawkettes (35-4) had their first and only set point at 24-23, then West took over.

At 26-all, Olivia Fairfield collected back-to-back kills to give West the win.

Potter was the all-tournament captain after collecting 11 kills Saturday.

“(The championship) means everything to us. I’m so happy to be a part of it,” Potter said. “We’re not just a team. We’re a family.”

Ankeny had won the previous two 4A titles, beating the Women of Troy in four games in last year’s final.

Alli O’Deen, who recovered from an offseason torn ACL, joined Potter on the all-tourney team after leading all hitters with 13 kills. Also selected were Maddie Manning and Erin Ronnenburg of Ankeny, Cedar Rapids Kennedy’s Allie Hutcheson and Cedar Rapids Xavier’s Ty Sampson.

An eight-point surge in the second game gave West a 17-9 lead, then the Women of Troy held off the Hawkettes at the end. O’Deen ended it with a kill.

West scored three straight for a 4-1 lead in Game 3, and led the rest of the way.

“We knew what we were fighting for,” O’Deen said. “We got behind in the first game, but we settled down.”

“We wanted that 3-0 sweep,” said Found, who dished out 41 assists. “After each point, if they scored, we just said, ‘Next ball.’ ”

Ankeny was the taller team, but the Women of Troy had a 16-6 advantage in blocks. Fairfield had five.

Roggenburg led Ankeny with 11 kills.
